Guns for Beginners How to Buy A Used Gun

Good read on how to buy a used gun, I have purchased several here lately with no regrets, good information in this link.

Good article Anni, thanks!
Is partially why enjoy reading and hearing about so many different firearms so much.
Another is not enough room to put them all? :)

Article's not completely gospel, is good starting off info though, there are variables. One is to know product as well as can beforehand. Rarities for another example can greatly increase or decrease values. Some of the best words in article? Pay attention to gut feelings if dependable, walk not talk if something feels fishy or out of place, likely is.

i have sold 3 guns with in the past few months. with each gun, went along a "logbook" of when i bought it, date of build, how many rds shot, brand of ammo, among a few other informative facts.

each gun was cleaned to near like off, the factory assembly line, and lubed, better than from the factory

i think we have all seen used guns for sale, that looked like it went thru the muck and mud. showing lack of pride to me.

presentation is what gets a buyers interest.

and documentation helps

Hi Oliviamia1353.

The laws vary by state, and sometimes by county or city (or parish). Probably the best place to start, if you haven't already, is to sign up for a concealed carry class in your local area. The classes usually delve into the laws in your area. As an alternative, members here are pretty well dispersed, so if you feel comfortable in letting us know where you live, you may be able to get some free advice.

It sounds like you may be one of the new or potentially new folks who are deciding that you are responsible for your own self defense. Good for you!

Public Where do I find laws regarding the possession of firearms?
Here’s a start. This is pretty comprehensive. Click on the state you are interested in on the map. It will give you their laws, how to get a permit and what states have reciprocity with your state in terms of honoring carry permits. Pretty good site.

Good article! I've walked away from some nice pistols at a shop that wouldn't let me break them down to see if the bore was rusty or corroded. New buyers should know what to look for and when to walk away. That's all good info.

I’m not exactly a beginner, but I have never purchased a firearm online before. I know you are taking somewhat of a chance buying a used gun on line because you can’t handle the gun. So, my question is, should I take a chance on a used S&W model 360 for around $600 (maybe less), or just get a new Charter Arms Mag Pug brand new for maybe $350-$400? I know S&W is a much better gun than a Charter, but I’m not sure about taking the chance on a used one. The online dealer has an A+ rating with well over 14,000 sales. I’m sure that makes a difference…

right now in fact, i have been scanning gunbroker and gunsamerica for a Colt SS 1911.....

too high a price for new at some places, and some have no roll marks, and some are used. i will not buy any gun with out roll marks or used, no matter the brand, or seller online.

i'd want to check them out in person, such as at a gun store.

for me to buy a used gun of any brand, at the prices they want, i'll buy brand new...online, and i have.

I get the sentiment. However, I’m sure thousands of used/vintage firearms are sold over the internet. There must be some way to gauge whether it is worth it. Is there a price point that makes it worth it? Can you go by pictures and a description? Does the seller rating mean nothing? I’m sure there must also be some distinction between buying from an actual gun shop, making thousands of sales vs. an individual, only having sold a handful of items.

There's many flags to look for like how long has someone been in business. 1 year is virtually nothing. Online/offline sales? Buying or selling guns or anything else, know your product and seller as well as can be done 1st is best advice.

Personal thoughts? Never buy anything unlikable just because it's valuable. If don't like it or can't use it, but buy it just because it's a good deal or valuable? - You may be stuck with it for a very long time. If it's at least something likable to at least you, then it's worth at least that? If not, I pass.

Looks like the dealer has been in business for 39 years and does have a brick and mortar site. They sell all kinds of firearms stuff including firearms.

I know what I want, not just looking to buy anything. Just questioning about buying a used S&W online. Just struggling on whether I should take the risk. New is another story. I don't think I'd hesitate. I'm just not sure you can be 100% on used.
