Before using any priming tool make sure you have your eyes on.
When hand priming have the case pointed away from you, other people and objects.
(I have hand primed hundreds of thousands of cases and NEVER had one ignite. That means
they are perfectly safe or I'm over due. Either way always be safe as I am)
I have two RCBS hand primers. They both will load small or large, pistol or rifle primers.
The first one that I acquired is listed as a Hand Primer.
Pros: Works as advertised.
Cons: For each caliber you want to load you must have that shell holder installed.
Primer tray will hold 100 primers and is grooved to easily flip primers to proper orientation.
Cost is about $50..... Sometimes on sale with $10 off.
Second is the Universal Hand Primer.
Pros: Needs no shell holder for 32ACP to 45-70 Calibers.
Cons: Doesn't handle my 45LC/454 Casull cases.... they pop out.
Primer tray will hold 100 primers and is grooved to easily flip primers to proper orientation.
Cost is about $70.... Can sometimes be found on sale with varying savings.
As the universal handles all but my 45's I purchased a second 45 shell holder and have dedicated it to
my standard hand primer. I leave it set up for large primers and I'm always good to go.
I prefer to hand prime over press priming as I can feel and view the primer for proper seating.
A primer that is not fully seated may take two strikes of the firing pin to ignite. First hit fully seats the
primer, while the second strike will then fire the cartridge.
