Handguards

Looking for new handguards for both my pistol uppers. Anything in particular I should be looking at? Most seem to be made of 6061-T6 aluminum, but range in price from like $65 up to $300. What’s different about these? Mounting systems or something else? The less expensive ones seem pretty good, but don’t want to waste money if they are crap…

EDIT: Have free float and want free float.

Brands! Some are quality and others are questionable. Most are proprietary with included barrel nut? I have a few that are anodized, but don't care for them as much. I've spent anywhere and in between 50-340 $ (some on sale), but never tried too torture test any. Carbon fiber and other so no problems with any I've bought.

What uppers? I mean what brand.

This is the one I’m probably getting for my 5.56 Saint Victor pistol. This is the perfect length to uncover the barrel threads for suppressor use when that comes in.

Here’s one I’m looking at (among others) for my .300 BLK. Just because I’m not real happy with the one that’s on there. And I do want FDE for the .300 BLK. Not real sure how to know whether it’s really good or not.

This P&S Forums thread should serve as a good primer - https://primaryandsecondary.com/for...ommend-mlok-ff-handguards-for-laser-use.6086/ .

The real question is how serious you expect to be with a laser aiming device. Handguard deflection is a real thing, but how much you have to spend to minimize this phenomenon is highly dependent on just what you intend to do with the gun.

A shorter tube should inherently be more resistant to flex, and the later posts in that P&S thread helps bring further usage-based context to this issue - both of which should help guide your purchase.

I would look at MAS Defense. At least for the 300 BLK.
Ehhh… I love their stuff, but not overly enamored either their handguard options - just in terms of looks. Like I said, my upper is from them and I have a BCG and charging handle from them that I’ve been VERY happy with. I’ll take another look though. When I looked closely, I was looking for something for my 5.56. Nothing in the size I needed. Maybe they do have something I would prefer for the .300 BLK.

I think what I’m looking for is short enough to not worry about deflection. One is a 6.7” and the other is a 7”. Use is for HD, general target shooting and maybe some hunting. Nothing too extreme.

This suggestion may not have turned out to be bad! :) Just looked again for the 300 BLK and found this. I will certainly make it easier to change out. I’m sure the mounting system will be the same since they are both from MAS Defense. At least I would hope so.

Here’s the one I have on there now. It just feels too fat to me. Looking for something a little more streamlined and thin and I think the one above may just fit the bill.

Check out STNGR handguards. They’re based in Texas. I just recently put their 10in Hawk handguard on my FX-9 pistol. Came with their proprietary attachment system and barrel nut.

Actually not sure this is a screw on. That may just be the barrel nut inserted into the end of the guard…

It just has the barrel nut inserted already.

Anyone know if the Saint Victor uses a standard barrel nut, or is it proprietary?
Most AR15 free float handguards will require a matching barrel nut from the same manufacturer. The thread pattern for the barrel nut will be the same for all AR15's upper receivers with the outside diameter of the nut being unique to the free float handguard.

On AR-10 pattern rifles you can find different upper receiver barrel nut thread patterns with DPMS and ArmaLite pattern threads.
