Handloads: .30-30 Winchester

One of my all time favorite rounds. Certainly not the fastest, nor the hardest hitting, not even a really pretty cartridge, but I love it. Started hand loading it way back about 50+ yrs ago with a simple "Lee" hand loader tool. You know, the little square box with a few pieces of hardware in it and you had to buy a small plastic hammer to use it.

Those little kits are still around but quite a bit more expensive than my first one. Seems like the first was about $8-$10 or so. Now they're north of $30-$35 I think. I currently have a Mod 94 Win that my wife bought me as a first anniversary gift, and two "Savage/Stevens bolt actions.

Over many yrs of taking youngsters out to the woods for their first hunting experience, those two bolt guns have had many, many shooters. For most, if not all of them, those little bolt guns were their very first shooting experiences. The little 30/30 has many satisfied users.

For many yrs I even kept one or both of them out at my hunt camp during the season so that whenever someone else brought some kid out and expected him/her to "Man up and shoot this thing" when they were shooting a 7mm mag or similar, I could always offer/provide one of those little rifles for the kid to shoot. I'm convinced they saved several of those kids from developing a hatred for shooting only because some stupid adult caused them so much pain and/or embarrassment.

Yeh, just gotta love that ol' 30/30 !!!!! for many reasons. (y) (y) (y)

Damn, it just occurred to me that recipe for the hand load the writer listed indicated that he was shooting in 24F degree weather !!!!! I don't care who ya' are ...... that's just too damned cold to be out in it for anything, especially testing a load that I could have done all last summer !!!:eek:o_O

I never shot a 30/30. I started with a 06. My brother had one. They were are first rifles. My parents bought it and a box of shell for him, he sold it a couple years ago and still had the same box of ammo minus a couple rounds. He had it for 25 to 30 years.

24F temps are mild winter temps for the folks in the Northern tier states, and we're out-and-about in it all the time.

Almost that chilly right now & I'll be at the range in a few hours.

A very versatile cartridge. Also useful is the less well known 32 Spl. You can reload 32 Spl with 30-30 brass and vis versa. And, when your 30-30 barrel is shot out, you can put a 7mm barrel on it and chamber it in 7-30 Waters which is a really fun cartridge.

Sadly, the good man Talyn man writes of the detriment and disadvantages of living in the cold, cold north. The cold has so muddled his brain, he's ultimately headed for the range in that kind of weather !!!!:rolleyes:o_O😇

In all honesty though, if you're actually headed for an outside range in that kind of cold weather, I'll give you a lot of credit ........................... obviously for toughness, not necessarily intelligence !!!!!!!! LOL! LOL! (y)(y)(y)

Man, I never have liked the cold but could usually tolerate it to go hunting or even to work when necessary. But these days my old bones have gotten so beat and broke up, and my blood has gotten so thin, I don't even like it in the 60's. At 70F or below I'm already uncomfortable, below 60, I'm looking for a heater somewhere !!!!!

We've just had a few days in the high 40's and 50's over night here and I've not gotten out of bed since last Monday night. With plenty of covers on my crotchety old body !!!! Yeh, I'm a real lightweight when it comes to the cold !

That's T-shirt & shorts weather here, and almost sun-tanning temps. ;)

My god son, it appears your brain has been deeper frozen than first thought !!!! C'mon down to the sunny south to thaw out. I promise you won't regret it!

Sorry guys, gotta run for a few minutes ....... you know, that damn 'countin' money' thing again ! (y) 😇 I'll be back shortly.

Dang it guys, it appears both of you have been stricken with that 'cold weather' brain syndrome. Neither of you are thinking clearly ....... just think how much worse it will be when dementia sets in too !!!!

Yeh, y'all better come on south !!!! (y)(y)(y);):)
