One of my all time favorite rounds. Certainly not the fastest, nor the hardest hitting, not even a really pretty cartridge, but I love it. Started hand loading it way back about 50+ yrs ago with a simple "Lee" hand loader tool. You know, the little square box with a few pieces of hardware in it and you had to buy a small plastic hammer to use it.
Those little kits are still around but quite a bit more expensive than my first one. Seems like the first was about $8-$10 or so. Now they're north of $30-$35 I think. I currently have a Mod 94 Win that my wife bought me as a first anniversary gift, and two "Savage/Stevens bolt actions.
Over many yrs of taking youngsters out to the woods for their first hunting experience, those two bolt guns have had many, many shooters. For most, if not all of them, those little bolt guns were their very first shooting experiences. The little 30/30 has many satisfied users.
For many yrs I even kept one or both of them out at my hunt camp during the season so that whenever someone else brought some kid out and expected him/her to "Man up and shoot this thing" when they were shooting a 7mm mag or similar, I could always offer/provide one of those little rifles for the kid to shoot. I'm convinced they saved several of those kids from developing a hatred for shooting only because some stupid adult caused them so much pain and/or embarrassment.
Yeh, just gotta love that ol' 30/30 !!!!! for many reasons.
