hellcat factory trigger pull

gkc

Alpha
So I want to upgrade my hellcat to the apex trigger but was cautioned that the new trigger shouldn't have a pull much less than factory specifications if I were to use it as a personal defense weapon.

Anyone know the specs on factory trigger pull weight?

Looks like all the research I've done on apex is around 5lb pull after switching it out.

5lbs is not too light for concealed carry. If you are worried about overzealous prosecutors I wouldn't. There hasn't been a single documented case of it being an issue in a justified self defense shooting.

I watched too many Massad Ayoob videos, lol.

I would guess that the odds of your gun even being scrutinized to the point anyone knows there was an aftermarket trigger installed are slim. Unless there are exigent circumstances. I mean 5lbs is NOT a hair trigger. That's almost in the neighborhood of mil spec triggers on an AR. And almost every 1911 in a holster right now has a lighter trigger weight than that.

Makes sense. I'm finally in a state where I can get my CCW and want to make sure I'm not too fancy with anything. Thanks for the advice!

Well brother, there are Apex triggers in millions of carry guns right now. If there was a problem we would know about it. Enjoy your newfound freedom and welcome to the forum.

Does the Hellcat in question have a manual safety?

If not I'd reconsider putting a lighter trigger in it for concealed carry. Like @Bassbob stated above that most 1911s have a trigger in the 5lb range, they also have a manual safety and grip safety.

I personally wouldn't recommend a lighter trigger in a concealed carry piece unless it had some form of safety especially considering I carry IWB appendix and I've grown really attached to having all my man parts intact and wish to keep it that way.

What kind of trigger weight on those Sig Legions we were talking about?

For the record, the average trigger weight of the HK VP9 is about 5 lbs. And it is considered to be one of the top 2 triggers on any striker gun.

My polymer Q5 Match is around 4 lbs.
I agree a lighter trigger is definitely better for improved accuracy. I have quite a few firearms with triggers in the 2.5 to 3.5 range along with carry pistols in the 4 to 5 lb range.

The Apex the OP is talking about putting in his is about 5lbs. Which I think is fine for a carry gun with no safety.
I guess length of trigger pull would need to be taken into the equation also.

I have used Apex triggers in a couple M&P pistols and the improvement was well worth it. I carry a 9mm shield 2.0 most days with the Apex trigger. This pistol has no build up, only the wall and an extremely clean light crisp break.

My statement was to that I wouldn't carry anything with too light of a trigger that doesn't have some sort of manual safety such as manual thumb or back strap grip safety.
Not going to get an argument from me on that, but as much as I advocate for putting the trigger you want in your gun, I am not all that particular. I have never put an aftermarket trigger in any polymer gun. If I don't like the trigger I won't buy it. The stupid hinged Shield trigger works ok for me. I shoot it very well when utilizing it for it's intended purpose. Training for self defense. If I was shooting IDSPA or something I would probably be using one of the 9s.

My buddy has an Apex in his Shield 9. I shot it and was underwhelmed. I think he just did the trigger though, not the whole drop in kit with the sear. I would consider it in my .45, but I shoot that gun too well to screw with it.

Of course now, thanks to you, I had to go look at the Apex kit for the .45 and I think I want it.
