How to Find or Build Basic Shelter

If you're going to be outside for more than 24 hours, or in dangerous conditions, shelter is crucial. In most cases, finding water should be your first priority, but shelter is a close second. Extremely cold weather can be fatal in as few as three hours, but even in milder climates, having somewhere to stay comfortable and dry is essential.

If you’re in the toolies you’d best have a basic kit with you-as a minimum, fire starter, a water container (canteen/collapsible bottle), water filter straw or purification tablets, a decent knife, a couple space blankets, a few high energy bars, paracord, and a reliable handgun. My friend does a lot of solo hiking in the sticks and carry’s all this in a Fanny pack. (NAA mini master in .22 Mag). This small and light package could keep you alive when you’re stuck out there. I keep a larger but similar kit in an ammo can in each of my vehicles.

The first thing I thought when I read this article was there are very few empty caves in my woods. I'm throughly convinced that you're better off bringing your own shelter than trying to build or take one.

My wife and I have been on pre-evacuation more than once due to wildfires so I decided to put together a go bag.

When I started I had no idea what I should put in it so I did some research.

If you overlook the fact that its basically a commercial for REI, this video is the best list I've found.
