How to mount Red Dot Scope

I have a standard Saint Ar-15 rifle.
I received a red dot scope for Christmas.
Do I have to remove the front sight from by gun? If so how?
What kind of front sight is it?

Flip up or fixed A2 sight?

Either way you should be able to co-witness with the sight in place with the hi-rise mount for your red dot. If you have a fixed A2 sight that is also your gas block and it cannot be
removed unless you replace the entire gas block with a low profile type.

Co-witness is where you can see the iron sights through the red dot sight.

Most people prefer the ability to co- witness as so you have a backup sight.

Is your red dot strictly a red dot sight or a prism sight?

If it's a non magnified red dot a good mounting loca is directly above the ejection port. If your sight is a prism sight you will need to find the eye relief for proper sight picture which is usually as far back as possible on an AR.

No.

With a co-witness height mount the red dot can be zeroed to the A2 front sight, and it won't affect seeing either.

Neither will a LPVO if similarly mounted on the flat-top upper with the FSB. You'd see a ghost of the FSB at 1X but that goes away at higher powers.

Besides retaining the A2 FSB will allow for the rear BUIS to match to when the optic is off the rifle.

I mount my red dots at/just behind the junction of the receiver & the handguard to provide clearance for the charging handle & BUIS at the rear, but also to balance the weight if I have a larger Aimpoint CompM2 or Pro on the AR.

You can get away with a 2x and sometimes a 3x and still see the iron sights clearly. I state this as I have done it this way before. If you have a variable then it will still work when at 2x (maybe 3x) and less power. I haven't tried any with a less than 30mm objective.

I've heard with magnified optics the front sight basically disappears.
It can if the X is over 3 and sometimes 2, but 2 will get you view of front sight. I've done this with a $40 something optic. Bersa, I think or another low dollar optic. I had shots on target at over 300 yards with a 2x magnified iron sights. It was cool to see irons magnified!

Unless the battery dies in my red dots I would not continue to look through it & use the front sight since everything I have is on QR mounts.

I see no need to look through a functioning red dot & turn it down or off just to use the FSB front site. The FSB front site doesn't bother me when looking at the lit dot.
true!
