So basically a rod hard enough to receive a blow from a hammer and not break and soft enough not to damage the barrel of a gun.

I had something like this happen in my Rem 7600. The gun would not fire (as a very big buck walked pass me) not sure why but I had to hit the stock on a stump to get the slide to eject the round and the bullet stayed in the barrel. Factory ammo.
