How To Safely Store Your Gun in Your Car

Good tips.

I’d add...don’t advert that there might be a gun in the vehicle...no NRA stickers, “Insured by S&W”, or SA Crossed Cannon logos, etc...they just tell thieves where to look.
Thief will target the make of vehicle, ease of entry and other factors as quick as the stickers. Stickers have no more to do with a break in vs leaving things in plain sight.

I'm sorry but you're wrong on that account.
Back in the day when friends had blaupunkt stereo, Alpine etc stickers their cars had entire dashboard tore apart trunks drilled to get at it.
Just like firearms do not advertise. Of course you're advertising every day when you're driving down the street thumping real loud and everybody can hear it five blocks away.

You'll find no sticker on my vehicles. Heck even the NRA ask that you do not put their stickers on your house or vehicles windows. I'm pretty sure they know a thing or two to borrow a phrase from a well known insurance commercial.

I never leave guns unattended in a vehicle. Ever. I do have a hidden handgun safe under the seat just in case, but I have never used it.
What if you are going to a destination where you cannot take your gun in? Say you have a court date, or some sort of appointment in a government building downtown in a big city? Do you just leave your home unarmed for the entire trip?

In my opinion, and in my experience, there are times when I go somewhere that I will not be able to carry my firearm with me inside of a building or event, but I don't want to travel to or from there without being armed. The only choice is to leave the firearm unattended in the vehicle.

I don’t leave any of my guns in my truck overnight. My current truck was broken into once, rear passenger door window popped out, the guy that replaced it showed me how easy it was. Thieves know not to open doors which will set off the (passive) alarm. Truck horn.
Basically useless noise.
Needless to say I was not happy. The gun safe under the seat was taken apart like it was made from cardboard. Only thing taken was a magazine with 9mm Ammo. The truck now has a full blown Viper Alarm, just put your hand near, an inch from any of the glass and the noise is deafening. I recently upgraded to dual sirens both 5 times bigger then standard install.
Anyway no stickers on the truck about guns, “my opinion” not a good idea. Your just asking for trouble.

I make a point not to go anywhere that I will be searched or go through a metal detector. I can't remember the last time I had to go to court or a federal building. I live in a rural area in an extremely gun friendly state and county. Nowhere around here that I can think of has a "No firearms" sign and I would ignore it if they did. I only go to the city to work and in situations where I am on the job and can't have a gun on me, it is in the truck, locked and sitting right where I am working. I work out of a Freightliner M2 pulling a 24' float and a backhoe. With cameras. Besides I can't remember the last time at work where I felt the need to not have a gun on me.

If there was an event I wanted to go to, say a concert or a baseball game, and it was someplace I couldn't carry I just wouldn't carry. I always have a couple knives on me. There's much less chance of me needing a gun during a rare, brief excursion into a venue than there is someone breaking into my vehicle.

I feel naked, but i leave it home.
Also, in our state, like many others, if you have a firearm in the car and have been drinking, its a huge deal. Not ending well. (Wont end well with DUI, but lets not digress) Lots of bars are not permitted to have weapons in them. My line of work, 90% of places I go I cannot carry. I’m not leaving my firearm in the car. I find other ways to defend myself if needed. Also, bar owners are allowed to be armed, so I’ll make sure im with him 😉

I installed a console vault in my Tacoma and have a small three combo lock safe under the passenger seat accessed from the rear seats. That box is attached by a security cable which I didn't think was very secure (that's when I installed the console Vault with the four combo lock). I usually carry my pistol (currently the Hellcat), but will sometimes lock it (and other valuables), in the Console Vault when renewing my carry permit (Sheriff office is in the courthouse (no firearms or cell phones)), or when having a medical test done such as a CT scan and the like. I usually plan multiple trips when making appointments, so after storing the gun and later getting back to the truck, it's easy enough to re-holster and go onto my next stop where firearms are allowed. I don't have any kind of stickers on my truck.
Below is a link to the console vault site, if anyone is interested in this alternative.
Good post Anni.

I have one of those in one vehicle and am getting one in our new vehicle. They are reasonably secure and hidden from plain sight. I highly recommend them.

Until I more or less retired, I constantly needed to remove my gun on those days I needed to be in the state house. Even though I was certed to bypass the metal detectors, it still wasn't legal for me to carry in there.

Fortunately for me I’ve never been arrested for carrying in the wrong place. Not sure if it was because of my demeanor or what, but sometimes I literally forget that I was even carrying and yes I’ve been stopped, but never arrested. To me carrying is like putting on your glasses or getting your car keys. It’s just second nature to me.

As others have said I also live in a very firearms-friendly state, and in an area of relatively low-population levels and crime compared to elsewhere in the country.

Going to & from the range and/or hunting folks have guns in their rigs. When I have stuff in my rig its' parked in high-visibility areas, and they're out of sight of prying eyes. And I don't adverstise my hobby on my rig like others do.

Some stupid folks keep guns in their rigs when parked over night and those do get broke into and stolen. My rig is always garaged in a secured garage, and I never keep firearms in my rig overnight if planning on taking them out.

The only places I frequent where I can't carry are the local post office and the school where I vote. Both are very close to home so everything goes in the safe at home when I have to go there for as long as those trips take. Our county courthouse allows LEO's and CC's to check their firearms while inside. All you have to do is notify the officer at the scanner, show your carry permit, and they walk you the 25 feet to a secure checkroom where you put your firearm in a safe deposit type box. You get one key and the officer posted there has the other one. It takes both keys to open the box when you leave. I learned this the first time I had jury duty and thought this was great. It's also handy when I need to renew my carry permit.

Hey Chance, they're offering free shipping and 20% off with code if you order soon. You mentioned you were getting another one, so here's the link with requirements, dates, and discount code, if you or others are interested:

Your right on target with everything you said. Totally legit. checked out there website. I didn’t even know they made safes for motorcycles. Even though I own a 1997 Harley Davidson I’ve stopped riding it because it’s become kinda glitchy. So I decided to buy a Hayabusa. No way am I going to put a safe in that thing. They will just steal the entire bike. Definitely going to purchase one tonight for my car. Thanks for the info
