How to Treat Hypothermia

Hypothermia in its early stages is very treatable. Odds are good you've dressed incorrectly and gone somewhere, only to suffer the involuntary shivering associated with its onset. You survived-and with the proper treatment, so can nearly any victim.

After working construction for forty plus years you learn to dress for the elements.
Always dress in layers and always buy quality winter gear no matter how geeky you think you look.
Always keep extra clothes in your car just in case you get stranded your temp could drop in a matter of minutes.
Of course, this is common knowledge to most of you guys who hunt.

10-4. Hunters, range freaks, and those whose job puts them in the elements learn (or should) quickly to dress against the elements. No reason to be uncomfortable in the cold. With so many new offerings that are lightweight and comfortable along with layering and ventilating it's not difficult. Years past, when I'd go into a howling winter gale, I would first warm anhydrous lanolin, smear it on over my entire body, then the base layers and up to the parka. One can "overdress" and find ways to cool off but not visa versa; once you're under temp the only solution is a heat source. More often these days I prefer prevention by the fire with a thermos of Masala tea..............
