HS-9 a.k.a Springfield XD, a second grade gun?

Hi everyone,

in another forum, there was a discussion about this pistol, some members said it's a good pistol but its a 2nd grade , you cannot compare it to Glock or SIG SAUER but you can compare it with Taurus or Ruger.

is there a truth in this? is there a grading system and who can say this pistol is 1st grade or 2nd grade?

I never classify any guns, I also see nothing wrong with Taurus or Ruger, or XD’s, to be honest, you can get a lemon in any firearm no matter the manufacturer. So I don’t think it’s fair to say firearm is second rate, as long as the owner is satisfied and the gun goes bang, and if you do have an issue, the manufacturer takes care of it is all that matters to me.

This issue is discussed a lot on the XDTalk Forums, @lawbet7eb - and it comes up repeatedly.

The threads I cite below originate c.2010, 2015, 2017, and 2019.

My screen-name there is the same as it is here, "TSiWRX," and if you'll search through those threads ( the XDTalk search-engine allows searching within threads, so you don't just have to page through endless pages ;) ), I believe that I painted a fair picture in the responses that I'd crafted within each of those discussions.

I hope those past posts can help you formulate a basis upon which to decide -for yourself- regarding the question you'd posed above. :)

Those are horse hockey!
With the exception of the roll pin, I immediately change out the stock for the better multi-layered roll pin. At one time a few yrs ago I seen a titanium striker that I thought very hard about buying. By the time I revisited the thought (i.e. afford one) I could no longer find any. So I think that they may have had problems or it just was not a good idea, either way they seem to be unobtainable now.

The XD and HS (same guns) have now been sold and used world wide for 21 years. If they were that bad I am sure they would not sell as well as they do.

And you are right the XD does not compare to the Sig. XD's don't fire by them selves or when you drop them. See what I did there. You can take any firearm and manufacture and you will always find complaints. Don't listen to the internet, are you happy with your purchase and does it fit you and your lifestyle? if it does roll on, if it don't go get something that does.

Couldnt agree more

I have the XDe, XDs, XD Mod 2, all in 3.3” barrel 45acp, and the XDM 5.25” barrel in 10mm. I’d say they’re in the same ball park as my Glocks, S&W M&Ps, Sig P320s, etc. However, I honestly can’t compare them to any of the Ruger similar models, as I currently don’t own any (other than Ruger revolvers, a 10mm SR1911, and 2 Mark IV 22lr pistols).

Try as I might I have not been able to get my XD Mod2 to fail. Thousands of rounds, including some rather long classes with pretty high round counts. Is it as reliable as a Glock ? Mine is more reliable than my Glock, since I don't own a Glock.
I have an XD Mod2 5" in 9mm and a XD Mod2 subcompact. I have over 9000 rounds through the 5" and not one issue with the weapon. I have wore a couple of the magazines. When I bought the Mod2, I could have bought anyone of the XD line. But there was some5thing about the trigger and the way it felt in my hand that led to be buying and after I did I was really impressed by the way it shoots. It has made 4 trips to Gunsite (each trip was about a 1000 round week). There was wind and sand and rain, each day the pistol caught pretty dirty, but nor problems. Until recently I would also use it for shooting Steel Challenge and IDPA, again never an issue.

I was really sad to see Springfield discontinue the model. I guess I need to blame them for making me go back to 1911 style pistols.

I have no issues with my Springfield XD/XDM’s being made in Croatia and every one that I’ve owned and currently own have run flawlessly. I can’t and won’t compare them to other guns because I’ve never owned or shot them, I recently purchased a Gen5 Glock in 40SW and find it to be a good gun as well. Will I buy more Glock’s doubtful but that is not saying anything about how they are as a manufactured firearm.
I will say there were other firearms from two different manufacturer’s that I purchased that I was not happy with and those were sold and I moved on.
My favorite handgun is my XD Mod2 in 40SW not only does it fit my hand perfect I shoot lights out with that gun and never had any issues with it. I will say that even though it is considered and stamped a sub-compact I see it as a short barreled full size gun.
My opinion.

New member to the forum so, hello. I bought my gen1 XD9 sub compact back around 2003-2004. It was my primary handgun and edc for a looooong time. Over 17 years and countless rounds, I've never once had a malfunction and I still love it to death. The only thing I've run into is the sight paint wearing off. I admit that I'm a bit of an SA fanboy, but I disagree with the assertion that it's second rate. Haters will hate, but my current (and future) SA line-up has me a very happy and well defended guy.
