I saw that on TV this morning. My response to my wife was it's about d@#n time. Glad to see it too Mr. W.I just learned that now, finally, more than twenty-three hundred stars of the Negro Leagues will have their statistics included in the MLB record books. Baseball has always been my favorite sport; I love and appreciate it even more now.
a faster pitch will yield a longer hit. advancement in baseballs, gloves, bats and other related items improved along with training............with that in mind Babe hit that with less games per season while drunk...........still he's better overall. He also (at 1 time) held the record for the most strike outsI personally think any baseball records from earlier than the 50s really should be kept separate and apart from modern MLB stats. Does anyone think the Bambino could belt 714 out of the park if he had to face off against Verlander or
Randy Johnson ?
I think the average pitch speed in 1935 was like 65 MPH.
Yes. I know all that. Still it’s almost two different games.a faster pitch will yield a longer hit. advancement in baseballs, gloves, bats and other related items improved along with training............with that in mind Babe hit that with less games per season while drunk...........still he's better overall. He also (at 1 time) held the record for the most strike outs
Doesn't the converse apply as well? Why do we assume that Ruth wouldn't have had problems facing the best pitchers in the Negro League? Josh Gibson would likely have been a terror in MLB.I can appreciate it, but I also question the pandering. Yes, I said it. If you add the stats then you also need to add the asterisks. I would have loved to known what Satchel Paige in his prime would have done against Babe Ruth, but it never happened.
Great. And, welcome to the forum, from Ohio.I saw that on TV this morning. My response to my wife was it's about d@#n time. Glad to see it too Mr. W.
Thanks from Washington State.Great. And, welcome to the forum, from Ohio.
Totally agree. Similar to golfs greatest all-time. Bobby Jones vs. Jack Nicklaus vs. Tiger woods.Doesn't the converse apply as well? Why do we assume that Ruth wouldn't have had problems facing the best pitchers in the Negro League? Josh Gibson would likely have been a terror in MLB.
Indeed, a perfect apples to apples comparison isn't possible. One can seriously doubt that the players in the Negro League got the same advantages in equipment and facilities their contemporaries in MLB did. For that matter, players in the first half of the twentieth century didn't have nearly the access to facilities, training and equipment those playing today have.
One thing seems to be consistent in most competitive endeavors; people with skills and talent are able to adapt and thrive. Few would suggest that Bob Gibson wouldn't be a badass pitcher today. Likewise, Pete Rose could probably hit most any pitcher of any generation.
Once you feel the need to arbitrarily add an asterisk to a record, it diminishes the entire roster. Who decides what deserves to be singled out for scrutiny and dismissal?
Enjoy the game. Appreciate those who played it better than the 99.8% of us who weren't blessed with such skills. Records are, and always will be relative to the time they were set.
Same here. If I want schooling, I'll go to school, if I want preaching, I'll go to church, SHUT UP AND PLAY BALL!Jusr another example of "WOKE" MLB being woke. i stopped watching them about the same time as the NFL when they started that kneeling crap.
C’mon, you’re splitting hairs here. Everyone knows baseball is not a real sport.I can appreciate it, but I also question the pandering. Yes, I said it. If you add the stats then you also need to add the asterisks. I would have loved to known what Satchel Paige in his prime would have done against Babe Ruth, but it never happened.
