Since dad passed a year ago in December we have been going through his stuff, at moms pace. This past weekend we were going through some boxes and came across a box of books.
Now this was odd as dad almost never read books, perhaps 2 Chicken Soup for the Soul books per year my wife would buy him and a technical manual for something he was fixing was about it. Maybe one of my bowhinter magazines up at the cabin.
Apparently he read more than I knew, and was a fan of Jerry Ahern, the old time gun writer and novelist. The box had what looked to be his entire Survivalist series, 80s trendy popular post apocalyptic fiction. I read through a couple and really cannot speak for dad's tastes lol. They were, interesting... the main character was a combination of James Bond, Mcgiver, and the Punisher. He did put in his love of Detonics pistols big time in it as it was John Rourkes favorite pistol. I remember Ahearn loved them so much he actually bought the company at one point. Overall I think his gun reviews were superior. There was a pretty decent Survival manual he wrote in there however. I gave the box to my nephews.
I was pleasantly surprised that my dad enjoyed reading, a passtime that has been a favorite of mine all my life.
