In this episode of TFBTV, James Reeves asks the question “is the M14 (or M1A) rifle obsolete?”

Not a fan of the stock in the vid, since I prefer the traditional stock, but totally agree the 6.5 CM is superior, than the traditional 7.62x51/.308 cartridge in the M-14/M-1A.

Disagree with Clint's comments regarding the AR-10 platform.

I view these kinds of articles/videos as clickbait for 2A fans. Absolutely no gun with a historical following is ever obsolete. The Winchester 1895, and the lever guns it spawned, are still popular sellers. The Colt Single Action Army still has a following, and Ruger Single Sixes are still selling. You could easily fill an entire gun store with different 1911 Models currently in production. There will always be new technologies and new cartridges, but pretty much any successful model at any point in history that still goes "bang" will meet the needs of some firearms enthusiasts. Even black powder still has a dedicated following. Just because a new model offers certain performance advantages hardly makes the predecessor obsolete.

So your saying that, "Long thin beats short fat"?

wmg1299 said up in msg #2 ..... "Absolutely no gun with a historical following is ever obsolete." Everything is perspective but, that one short statement pretty much says it all and can be argued till the cows come home. (y)(y)(y)(y)

At one time I had a Savage AR10 in
6.5 CM and one in .308 I sold the 6.5 and kept the .308 why? Because I enjoyed shooting the .308 more.
Accuracy is debatable and although I’ve documented some bolt issues with my .308 after getting it back from Savage and getting the my Sig BDX scope dialed in I got these shots at 200 yards.

Obsolete is a broad word. I own a SA M1A version of the gun. I also own a AR-10. If I needed that type of gun for combat, guess which I would choose? Sitting a blind for coyotes with a tripod, it would be the other one. I might also pick a different gun entirely if the terrain didn't make the .308 the right choice.

I like lever action and bolt action rifles and own a number of them. That does not mean I want to carry them into combat unless a reliable semi auto is not available.
