It's fairly common knowledge (or used to be) that the 1911 can be detail-stripped using no tools. The manual safety can be worried out with your fingers, and its pin is then used to extract the firing pin, which is used as a punch for everything else. The bent leaf on the sear spring gets the mag catch out (and locks it back in). 
But how many here know that if your recoil spring plug shoots off into the bushes while you're disassembling your 1911, you can replace it with a fired .45ACP case?
It'll last at least a few shots, until you can procure a replacement.
