My uncle (the Marine), was there during the WWII Pacific Island jumping campaigns. Not sure what weapon he carried, but he did get a Purple Heart for a wound he received. He said it was from a still that blew up, and my Father just shook his head at me indicating that's not how he was wounded.
Until I watched the HBO Mini Series "The Pacific" on DVD, I didn't realize the extent of the He11 these guys went through on these islands.
