Good article on the history of the j frame. I think everyone should have one

One of the finest, if not the finest pocket guns extant, IMO. One of the most concealable and reliable defense weapons out there. Some think they are belly guns only, pffffttt... I have seen a lot of old timers ring gongs from ridiculous ranges with them. Thry are about as accurate as the person welding them skill level.

I believe my next purchase just might be a new 442 from Lipseys, once we get out from under some of these medical copay.

Or several!

I own several J-frames and often carry my S&W 642. However, in .38 Special, they're difficult guns to master. Their small size makes recoil hard and difficult to manage.
I cringe every time I see someone, especially a gun shop, recommend one of these for first time buyers, particularly women. I've seen more than one lady try one of these and be put off on shooting permanently. :(
I really think the J-frame is at its best in the smaller .32 and .22 calibers.
I personally prefer the Colt "D" frame. Detective Special, Diamondback, etc. The new 3" Viper is very appealing to me and I'll likely buy one when they become more available.

I put these Diamond Pro Pachmayr grips on my model 36 and my 642 PC. The change was enormous on the 642. I highly recommend them especially for any light weight J - frame.

I carried a Model 36 3" heavy barrel in OSI from 74-78. It was a great little revolver but they started failing after 5000 rounds. They were replaced with a chopped 1911, which in turn was replaced by the Sig M-11
