Just What is the Use of the Vertical Foregrip?

For many years, the vertical foregrip (VFG) was the most overrepresented accessory on AR-15s.

You saw one on nearly every rifle in any message board picture thread. I had one on my first AR and even put one on my JAE-stocked M1A for a bit. They were just flat out tacticool.

Aside from the tacticool nature of the things, there are a few benefits that the VFG offers the savvy user. These come down primarily to ergonomics.

I use a few VFG's on different platforms. My SBR Scorpion feels so much better with the inclusion of a VFG as does my Hellion rifle, which greatly improved the handeling of these two firearms. I do have one AR15 equipped with a VFG that feels right at home on that particular rifle though none of my other rifles have VFG's.

I do not care for them, or pistol grips personally but, my wife has arthritis in both wrists and they helped her a lot with less bending of the wrists.

I'm not really an AR guy, but I do have a couple. I had one one one of my ARs. I'd seen so many ARs with VFGs on them that I thought they must be a must have item and guys who were more experienced with them that me must know something I don't. I tried to like it, but the damned thing just kept getting in my way. Recently I took it off and haven't looked back.

BTW: I found out that if you put a VFG on an AR pistol, according to ATF, That turns it into a SBR and have to register it. :poop:

Before I owned an AR, as I was researching and figuring out what I thought I might like, I was convinced I wanted a VFG on it. I had one on what was at the time a 20" Cruiser Mossberg 500. It was useful on that since it would help mitigate recoil battering your grip hand on a PGP. Even that was a short lived phase. That 500 now sports a Magpul SGA and that VFG has long been relegated to a parts drawer. Anyway, when I got my first AR I just started shooting it and never got around to putting one on it. In fact that AR doesn't have a hand stop or anything on it to this day. I do have hand stops on a couple other ARs ( one pistol and one carbine) but they aren't VFGs. The pistol sports a Viridian HS-1 and on my WC I have a SI Link like this.

I think the primary use of a VFG is maneuverability. If you are handling crowds or tasked with multiple possible targets in front of you it's probably faster. Maybe house clearing, etc...

And slinging anything with a VFG is a pain in the ass.
