Likely ran up on and surprised a mama bear

Sld1959

Ronin
By the sounds of what I have read it sounds like she was a jogger and likely ran up and surprised a mother grizzly and cub. They said Tracks of an adult and cub bear were found.

Wonder if pepper spray would have saved if she had it like recommended.

The way I see it is if we enter into an area where wild animals are we take a chance every single time. I have a habit of swimming out really far when I go to the shore and have been warned many times by lifeguards about sharks. My standard reply is always it's a risk I am willing to take to enjoy the ocean. But sadly the animal will be put down for it just doing what mother nature wants it to. To exist and be free and try to live period. Just my two cents...

Or a slower companion

I watched a documentary show about a year ago where a group of adventurers and a guide up by the northern reaches of canada were attacked by a polar bear. They only had a flare gun and the portable elec fence to keep bears away. Polar bear snatched a man from his tent at night. They were able to scare it away and a Dr in the group helped care for severely injured man. They called in for a helicopter.
Native came with the helicopter evac as only native guides were allowed to carry a gun in the Fed land. Helicopter pilot and guide counted like a dozen polar bears around camp just waiting on the adventurers… they left the native guide with the rest of the group and flew back after delivering the injured man to a hospital to get everyone else out of there ..

Bears on nothing to be trifled with…

This happened not far from my house. I'm continually amazed at how casually people (often tourists, but not always) consider the possibility of a large animal encounter around here. And it's not just bears, either - we have very healthy populations of wolves, mtn lions, moose, all of which can, and do, kill people in the region regularly. I see people all the time going for a run or a hike or a mtn bike ride without even having bear spray (not that it is always guaranteed to work, but at least it's something...). And there are even areas around here where people will look at you like you're crazy if you're actually carrying a firearm on a hike.

It's very sad, but as others have already said, I don't fault the animal at all - she was simply doing what she is hardwired to do in protecting her cub.

+1000.

Too many out-of-staters that visit or have recently moved here think Montana, Wyoming and Idaho are Disneyland attractions.

There have also been three out-of-staters that have drowned in the local rivers & large streams in the last week.
