Lytle Creek Live Fire Practice, 3/22/22

BassCliff

Professional
Hi!

Today was a nice day, high 70s, lots of sunshine, light breeze, just a glorious spring day. Last night Mrs. BassCliff came downstairs and said, "I need your help. There a bullet stuck in my gun." She likes to keep it on her nightstand but has been having to unload it and put it in the car whenever we have real estate stuff going on, showings, inspections, etc. I took a minute to show her how to clear the jam and make it ready. I suggested we go practice soon so that she can re-learn and get familiar with procedures. Mrs. BassCliff said "How about tomorrow?" :D

This morning we packed our kit, tossed a couple of target stands in the back of the truck, and we made our way up the the Lytle Creek Firing Line.

I'd never been up here on a weekday. I was expecting it to be a little slow but we were the only ones on the whole firing line. Cool!

You might remember, this is where I've been training with the Handgun Skill Builder Workshop twice a month. But today Mrs. BassCliff and I just enjoyed the firing line all to ourselves, and the beautiful scenery.

We had our very own Range Safety Officer, Robert, who was very helpful. (It's funny. I can offer a suggestion to Mrs. BassCliff to overcome an issue she may be having and get immediately scolded, "That's what I'm doing! It's not working!" But when Robert suggests the same thing Mrs. BassCliff will say, "Hey! You're right! That's much better!") :ROFLMAO: I'm glad Robert was there. Mrs. BassCliff got free training today from somebody other than her husband. ;)

I set up target stands at the 10 yard line. I shot mostly B-8 targets and the steel that was available. Mrs. BassCliff shot at the silhouette. As I think about it now, I should have moved the silhouette closer, 7 or 5 yards, for Mrs. BassCliff to practice her self-defense shooting. Next time.

Mrs. BassCliff did pretty well considering it's been a while. Robert and I worked on her grip and trigger technique. She was making progress throughout the session. We were there for about two and a half hours since the range closes at 12:30pm on the weekdays.

Even the silhouette seems small at ten yards. If Mrs. BassCliff needs to defend herself in our home it will be from much closer range.

These were my first two B-8 targets of the day. The top one was shot cold. I'm sorry I did not get a picture with the timer but both of these were sub-2 seconds on the first shot and sub-9 seconds for total time.

You can see Mrs. BassCliff is tearing up her silhouette. I was having fun shooting at the steel, 20 yards, 30 yards, and the hog was at 50 yards. I put eight out of ten rounds on that hog today.

I seem to have reached a plateau of sorts. My times are getting better but my accuracy is not. Perhaps I need to slow down a little. You have to learn to walk before you can run. ;)

Below are the last two B-8s of the day. Look at that first shot time! (I had to go from low ready, no holster fire on the general line.) But because I pushed too hard, my accuracy suffered. I did not check all the split times. You see just the last split in these pictures.

And the last one of the day, just before we left. I didn't even keep them all on the paper but I guess it would've done damage to a bad guy.

Still, it was a productive practice. Mrs. BassCliff got re-acquainted with her CW9 and I got to shoot some steel. Mrs. BassCliff has a couple of issues with her gun that I hope she can train around. Her left hand keeps hitting the mag release. Oops. I actually think I'll end up buying her another gun after we move, one that's more suitable for a lefty. Yes! More guns is always the answer! :D

Mrs. BassCliff had a good time and was admiring the view driving down the canyon so much we had to stop and take some pictures. We're going to miss this view.

Of course my cell phone does not do justice to the view, but you get the idea.

It looks like this is another week where I'll be heading to the range twice! Oh boy! This Saturday is another Handgun Skill Builder Workshop. I'll be able to attend only a couple more before we leave. I'm hoping to find something similar when we land in the Midwest. Mrs. BassCliff said she'd like to take more training classes once we get there. Yay!

Thanks for coming along with us today. We had a nice outing.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff

Hi!

Looks like you had a good time, wish my range was just as half as nice as this one

Everything looks better on the internet. 🤣 This range has some rough edges but it's similar in amenities to the other outdoor ranges in the area here among the foothills of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel mountains. There are six outdoor ranges within an hour of me, four of which are in the mountains. Yeah, I'm gonna miss this place.

Wow, what a beautiful day.

That's one of the things I like about living here. But the scales have tipped so we're leaving. ;) I'm almost starting to get used to the idea. Sort of. :p

Thank you for your indulgence,

Dont beat yourself up on the flyer circled in red on your timed run…

A groin shot will most definitely put down an attacker…. He’ll roll around clutching his goods. He wont be shooting back. In more ways than one 😉
