M1 Garand Ammo Question

I recently picked up a SA modern reproduction M1. I know the mil surplus requires M2 ball ammo. Can the new M1s handle commercial 30-06 or is the rifle still meant to operate within the original ammunition tolerances?

There are adjustable gas plugs that allow you to tune the rifle's function to 30-06 ammo that's not loaded to M1 Garand-specs.
