I went through an instructor course with the M60 and other Air Base Defense weapons c 1970. I had instructors who still spoke profanely about the 1919

Leaving the cloth belts loaded for long periods of time seems to make the cartridge stick and not function right. The metallic links are no problem. also for the cloth belts a belt loader is needed to push them up far enough.

The Marines in the Pacific improvised a similar weapon known as the Stinger. It used a lightweight M1919 scrounged from an out of commission fighter plane, a BAR bipod, and a Garand stock.
I understand that the failure of the T42 was due to someone messing up the chamber dimensions when changing the MG42 from 7.92 Mauser to .30-'06.

I don't think the thermals will so anything but look cool on the rifle in the zombie apocalypse because the targets will already be room temperature.
