M1A questions

I am new to the M1A. I just got this one two days ago. I have a couple of questions. First, the sighting in procedure calls for drifting the front sight to center groups laterally. Why not use the windage knob? The instructions say to loosen the lock screw on the front sight with a 3/16 "socket head wrench". It looks like a hex screw to me and it ain't 3/16. Maybe my eyes are going (again). My second question has to do with the stock. I have the walnut stock. The owner's manual says to treat the stock with tung oil or boiled linseed oil about once a year. The M14 manual that came in the package says to use raw linseed oil. Does it make a difference? I picked up boiled linseed oil on the way home and treated the stock because it looked very dry. Thanks for your help. I'm sure I'll have more questions!

Just use the rear windage adjustment.

BLO is fine, as well as PTO (pure tung oil). Best to get the stuff without the additives that's typically sold at Hardware stores.

Check out Real Milk Paint Company for the best stuff.

Thanks again. I put on the BLO and let it sit for 5-6 minutes and then wiped off the excess. The wife is not happy with the smell!

If you have a garage to put the stock in there. The warmth will help it dry faster, and keep the wife happy.

@FrankS gun stock blanks are kiln dried to between 6-8% moisture content before machining the outside profile and inletting for the action, this is done to guard against warpage and splintering, whatever you use is your choice just don’t use to much or apply to often. A little goes a long way!!!!
