Making a change…

Philmo11

Master Class
Well, I never thought I’d do it but my Springfield collection is gone. I took 26 guns to auction, my polymer Springfields didn’t make the cut. I kept my 3 Springfield 1911s and my stainless 911. Springfield still remains my favorite manufacturer of polymer pistols, I am just switching to all metal frame handguns.

Given that I have a decent size collection of wheel guns and 1911s, the switch won’t be as painful as it might seem. I did take a chunk out of my handguns though. Went from around 60 handguns down to around 35 or 36.

What all made the cut? The wife’s S&W 380EZ, the two .22s I bought for my boys to shoot (S&W 22 compact and a Walther P22.) and my stainless 911 micro.

I have a Kimber Stainless Raptor II in 10mm and a Metro Arms American Classic II in 9mm, both sitting at the FFL awaiting pickup.

Then everything else pictured below survived.

That’s it. There is always a possibility that something will come back from auction unsold but I wouldn’t expect many.

I had asked my boys what they thought the night I decided to do this and they were ok with it. I think at the end of the day, they’d rather be shooting my steel guns anyway.

I barely put a dent in my rifles/shotguns. Mostly handguns went. I only sent 3 AR12s, 2 Ruger precision rifles and a 45 carbine to auction. All my AR-15s, my Henrys and all of my walnut stocked rifles and shotguns remain in my collection. This move was mainly a switch in collecting handguns.

I have thought both ways, do I keep all my metal guns and get rid of the polymers, or do I keep the polymers and get rid of the metal ones. My wife just said keep them both, cause you may not be able to replace the ones you got rid of if you change your mind down the road, oh yea, she really doesn’t like guns that much, but she told me that.

That woman is a keeper you young whippersnapper. Hold on tight. 👍
😁

Good advice. Now go out and buy new, one of each 🤤 😆

Yeah, several of those I sent to auction are discontinued models. Once they are gone, they are gone.

At the end of the day, there are only two reasons I have polymer to begin with. High capacity and they are cheap. I’m thinking about branching out to the CZ/CZ clones (like Tanfoglio). That deals with the high capacity issue. Beside the fact that only 5 or 6 of my Springfields were even double stack to begin with.

The cheap really isn’t relevant any longer. I’ve far surpassed anything I would have imagined when I started collecting. It’s basically trade 3 polymer for 1 stainless steel frame. Not saying I won’t buy anymore polymer, just not planning on it.

As far as reliability, I’m just going to buckle down and fine tune what I’ve got to make them as reliable as humanly possible, starting with lapping and polishing every friction point.

i'd have to do an inventory of my 1911's, but i think i have at least 14 of them.

my revolver collection is growing, but at a slow pace. maybe 6 now..??

my 9mm collection has gone down.

i think i only have now, 5...??? and 1 of those is my CZ 75 B, which is all metal.

i have fallen out of favor of the 9mm, except for right now, my Hellcat. it's my only ccw, but i also have a G-30, with a holster, that i can carry, i just don't.

i have more fun at any range i go to, with any of my 1911's or revolvers, than i ever do with ANY of my 9mm polymer's.

except for that CZ 75 B, a sweet shooting, 9mm.

In my opinion, for accuracy during high speed shooting, 9mm in a 1911 is hard to beat. I’ve not yet tried a CZ but I expect the same. I have a Tanfoglio Stock II in my sights. Not a CZ but dang close.

yeah, i been holding back on a 1911 in 9mm, (or any other caliber) to me, if it ain't .45ACP, it ain't a 1911.

now too, my state passed a mag law of 10 round limits. that means, i'd have to not only buy a 9 mm (or any other caliber) 1911, but all 10 round mags as well

hhhmmmm.......cannot justify that.

When I put the vault in a couple months ago, I had one 9mm. Now it’s gone and I have three 1911s in 9mm. I am a big bore guy but I can’t deny they are just pleasant to shoot.

I ended up buying a EAA Witness Elite Limited in 9mm to replace my XDM 45 that used to be my bedside gun. I can’t copy the pics off the site I bought it from so I snagged a pic of the same model from another site for reference.

Got that nice durable hard chrome finish. Factory magwell and oversized ambi safety. Very nice SA only trigger out of the box from what I understand. It’s not the same as the SA/DA in the other Witness series guns.

Now, I ordered some new grips, 3 new mags. 1 aluminum base plate because the oem base plate doesn’t fit the Elite Limited’s factory magwell. I also ordered 2 extended base plates, new springs and followers all from Henning to convert the factory 17rd mags to 23rd mags. New G10’s from Amazon because the aluminum Extreme grips the wife and I both like are out of stock everywhere.

I ordered the silver base plates

these are the grips we both wanted

These were the grips I ordered until the ones I want come in stock somewhere.

Should make for a nice bedside home defense pistol. I need to find a good tritium sight for it. I wanted the hard chrome so you can see the dang thing in low light for point and shoot. Tritium night sight for near pitch black.

I wanted the replacement for the XDM to be an upgrade and as idiot proof as possible. I think this fits the bill.

I picked up a few of the guns I bought lately from my FFL. Got more coming but here are the actual pics of the ones I picked up.

That Kimber Stainless Raptor II 10mm is a beautiful gun, although I’m partial to black/deep blue guns I really like the brushed “Not shiny” stainless look.

1911 wall is looking good. Need to make room for more. I have another Springfield Loaded in 45, a Kimber Raptor in 9mm on the way.

Here’s some pics of the rifle cases I customized for transporting guns on 1911 range days.

Only got the two done. Need a new foam for the third one.

The 1911 family is growing… Here is a cool progression for anyone interested.

Very nice collection Philmo11. I don't have quite as many as you, but I do currently have 11. 3- Colts; 3- Kimbers; 3- Springfields; 1- Sig and 1- Ruger. they are in a combination of 9mm; 10mm and 45 ACP. There's always time for me to add more, but I do like the looks of yours, I must say.

Technically, I still own 8 not pictured. I’m selling off 6 and two are in route.
