Modernizing the 6mm-06

New Powders and Bullets make it sing.

Somewhere in the wildcat universe, the 6mm-06 wildcat appeared, but apparently never became very popular. In fact, the wildcat section of my modest collection of Cartridges of the World, ranging from the 1979 to 2013 editions, does not mention the 6mm-06. Neither does P.O. Ackley’s 1962 Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders, probably the most complete compendium of mid-twentieth-century wildcats, but it does include the .240 Super Varminter, the .270 Winchester necked down, essentially the 6mm-06 with a longer neck.

For better it worse, most wildcats don’t get a lot of attention. Unless you are a reloader, no ammo available means no interest. I speak from experience…had a 8mm/06. Great round and I reload, so bought it at a good price and kept it. But a non-reloader would have no interest.

I just looked at my P.O.Ackley books. There was an old business card in the 257 Roberts page :)
Says 257 Roberts was just about max for a 25 cal with good barrel life :)

I always liked the 7 X 57 case.

It was used for the 257 Roberts and 6mm Remington (originally 244 Remington).
I had both calibers in the past.

The Roberts experienced a unique transformation in 1974. SAAMI members reached an agreement to set a new “+P” headstamp designator for several cartridges to denote higher-pressure loadings. The .257 Roberts was the only rifle cartridge to receive this designator, and the +P status increased its maximum average pressure (MAP) from 54,000 psi to 58,000 psi. For comparison, the .30-06 has a MAP of 60,000 psi.

I put together my Sako 257 Roberts around 1980.

I built mine on a 7tw Kreiger. Shoot 115 Berger. I used re26 and have great luck. I will have to get my log for numbers. I started with 25-06 brass but wish i used 270.
