It’s a never ending process based on principles and calls for rigorous repeated testing and practice in going about putting together a get home or bug out bag.

My "Bug Out Bag" is really more of a "Get Home Bag".

Very early in my military "career" was selected for a M16 qualification range off post. It was supposed to be a one day thing. So that's what I packed for.

It ended up being a week long Cluster Frack.

I learned my lesson from that experience and I never again left main post without some "essentials".

Most of the really good lessons I've learned, I learned because I got caught short and decided I wasn't going to get caught short again.

While I was working security I had a pack that I brought to work every day rain or shine. I kept things in it to cover most of the "emergencies" I dealt with as a security guard. I was prepared to work a double every time I went to work.

Since I've been married my wife and I have been on pre-evacuation notice twice due to forest fires. We put together a "Go Bag" with all our important documents and comfort items if we should end up in an evacuation shelter. We also keep an emergency kit in the car so we're ready to go.

During the lockdowns I started seriously considering what I would want with me if I had to walk home from work.

I had no idea what I should pack so I went to YouTube and found this video as a good foundation to build from.

The list isn't exhaustive but it's a good basis.

I've also taken my pack and hiked in the mountains with it and did some refinements on what I carry and where in the pack I carry it.

Oddly enough since I am laid up i started going thru various car kits and my ghb. Looking into new options replacing batteries and out of date things.

Added some sheepskin slippers, and pac boot liners for cold weather when we only have shoes or to take off heavy boots when stranded in a car. Added tp and some new heavy wool blankets.

Working on my GHB which is designed to get me home if i am reduced to moving on foot. This was most important when i worked an hour from home.

I shot cleaned and reloaded all 5 magazines for the Makarov.

Went thru the first aid kit and changed out items. Changed out knives, put in new bag of jerky changed water tablets Added insulated leather gloves for winter changed out cap for a shemagh.

Pondering other changes.

Definitely kept my pioneer Woman water bottle, it keeps me in touch with my feminine side lolol. I asked wife to pick me up a water bottle for work a decade ago and this is what she came home with, have used it ever since lol.

I leave the ranch about once per week and have a 4x4 diesel truck equipped with ammo, water, a trauma kit, and a portable AED for getting home. I see about 15 minutes of news per day. I am not bugging out anywhere. Since I live out in the country and may lose coms I implore my friends here to give me warning when the screaming horde is coming. I will start worrying when they are in the wire....

We won't be bugging out either. This is our alamo...

Only kits we carry are vehicle emergency kits and whst i called a GHB made to help me get home in sn emergency. This was more important when I worked almost an hour away in case I've very had to hoof it home.
