More SA-35 Extraction Issues

I ran about 100 rounds through my new SA-35 a couple weeks ago with failures to extract on round 3 and round 53. The guys at the range wanted to try the SA-35, so they put another 25-50 rounds through it with 0 failures. I wrote off the two early FTE's as break in issues and left the range happy.

I read killerford's post listing the issues he experienced with his new SA-35. I got a little suspicious because it sounds like our guns shipped from the factory about the same time, and I believe that we live in the same region of the country. I thought it would be odd for his to be the only dud in a shipment with known extractor issues. I took my SA-35 back to range and immediately started experiencing multiple FTE's per magazine.

I experienced 3-5 FTE's per magazine when shooting Winchester White Box 115 gr. FMJ. I've never had problems with Winchester White Box, but I've heard of many shooters getting less than stellar performance from WWB, so I switched ammo just to confirm. Shooting a mix of FMJ from my bag of spare rounds, the SA-35 had one flawless mag, but four mags with 1-2 FTE's each. My spare loose ammo supply was exhausted after 5 mags, but I experienced enough failures to conclude that something was wrong.

I've been patient with break-in periods in the past, but that was when ammo was less than half of the current price. After 300-350 rounds my SA-35 is experiencing an average of 1-2 FTE's per mag. While I find it interesting that spare loose ammo that has been sitting in my bag for who knows how long fired more reliably than a fresh box of WWB, neither performance was what I expect from a new gun in this price range. I hate to say that I now have to send back my first Springfield product. Over the years, I believe that I have owned 15 Springfields, and this is my first problem child. It's a sad day and I'm hoping that Springfield can get things right with the SA-35 extractors before they ruin what would otherwise be a fantastic pistol.

Sorry to hear you’re having the same issue.
Hopefully we can get it rectified smoothly. 🙏

Sorry to hear all the problems. After having worked in Manufacturing in DP for 20 years I found one important thing. I never buy any product in the first year of its manufacture. Too often there is some issue either in the manufacturing process Or components that has to be worked out.

I’ve owned brand new items all my life. That never failed. Used as well. All machines will fail eventually, though. Fact of life.
Depends on the product and maker.

I’ll go down the road and give SA a chance to fix it .
Go from there. So is life.
Disappointed, but I’m not going to get all worked up about it.

Gives me a reason to shoot my SA 1911

I purchased my pistol approximately two weeks ago, with one failure to extract after sending thirty rounds through the pistol
I was using magtech ammo
I have not had an opportunity to get back to the range
My firearm was manufactured in the high five thousands and purchased in Webster Texas
I’m sure SA is addressing the problem and it would be a real head scratcher if it continues to persist

According to BHSS the extractor channel wasn't properly machined at the factory so that area needs to be cleaned up and a better extractor & spring installed.
My extractor channels were not rough, and to fix my extractor issues on 1 of mine I replaced the extractor and spring with a cylinder and slide extractor + heavy duty spring. I also replaced the sear with the bhspring solutions spring assist sear. She runs like the wind now NO ISSUES

Cool, glad it worked, good information for those with the same issue

I was thinking exactly this! The SA-35 issues are what they are, but I wouldn’t hesitate to buy another SA1911.

The SA-35 conundrum is certainly a worst case scenario for SA, but as mentioned previously problems like this in manufacturing are pretty common. The problem is that by the time a company becomes aware of a problem the product is in the consumer’s hands. This is standard operating procedure in the automotive industry, with the number in the millions before something is done. What annoys me most about SA is the complete lack of communication - not even a “we’re aware of the issues and we are working to get on top of them and get our loyal customers the product they’ve come to expect from us”. Instead they’ve decided to circle the wagons.

I got lazy and started another thread after Springfield returned my SA-35, instead of updating this one. Springfield said they replaced my extractor spring, but didn't mention any further work. The number of FTE's during the first 100 rounds after the gun was returned was reduced by more than half, but it still had more than I would like from a premium gun. The good news is that over the next 200-300 rounds fired, there was only 1 FTE, and that was probably a limp-wrist on my part.

I believe that my SA-35 is now running like it should. The range session where everything started to work correctly involved 200-300 rounds of 147 gr. FMJ. I'm not sure if it was the new spring, the gun finally breaking-in after enough rounds fired, or the 147 gr. ammo; but one of those things (or a combination of them) seems to have fixed the problem.

My .02 I have 2 sa 35s 1 runs great the other has issues I replaced xtractor and xtractor spring with a heavy duty spring, and sear bar (sear bar w spring was a just because I was there) now so far both running great. Fingers crossed. Cylinder slide spring and extractor bhspringsolutions sear with spring assist so it's a parts issue
