Musings of an old warrior

I have a general sense of disquiet that I have not felt since the 70's. Concerns about national security, political incompetence, inflation, the economy in general, the division of Americans by corrupt media and race hucksters, rampant drug abuse, violent crime and lack of support for law enforcement, the decline of Judeo-Christian ethics, the abyss of "wokeness", moral decay in our culture, and the list goes on. These things prey on my mind and foment unease. I feel that our ship is headed for a proverbial iceberg.

As a young man I believed we could make a positive difference here at home and on the world stage. Most of us here have dedicated our working lives to making things better. And you know what, we made some mistakes but we did make things better, in great strides. But from where I sit on the retired bench today, it seems those principles and core values that have carried America to greatness have gone stale, they are in the past, and our nation seems in many ways rudderless.

I ask myself "Why are we at this juncture, and can we recover?" The answer I keep coming up with is, Leadership. We need leaders to carry the banner of America. And they are not necessarily elected officials.

Anyone who ever worked in any kind of organization knows good leadership when they see it, but it is hard to define. There are two kinds of individuals in leadership positions. Those who expend all their energy to attain higher office for themselves but get very little done for anyone else, versus those who inspire and lead others to achieve great things. You can immediately spot the servant leader as opposed to the self served. The great leaders of American history stand out for their ability to uplift and inspire us as a united nation. But that trait seems to be in short supply today. I think perhaps we have gotten leadership and celebrity confused, perhaps we have allowed media to control our thinking as to what leadership is, perhaps bureaucracies do not tolerate strong leaders, perhaps all the noise has made us apathetic and ambivalent. But for whatever reason, I have the sense that our ship is headed for that iceberg and somebody needs to grab the wheel.

Edmund Burke is credited with saying "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing". It has been said that we are in the midst of a culture war. There are many good men and women emerging who are culture warriors, and some of them are true leaders. I see a glimmer of hope for our culture in those extraordinary men and women who are stepping forward to serve. I need them to step forward and assuage my sense of unease as to what the future holds for my grandchildren.

I ran a small group of appraisers in the Assessor's Office and it got to where the folks got it done without me hovering over them. It took years to get it there. The leadership changed and took it all apart, similar with our last election. I try not to think about how it all was ruined and good people were forced out.
There is considerable backlash and resistance forming and the upcoming election will change some of this, but a greater threat is the administrative state which seems to have more power than our elected representatives. Unless we can change that, I fear little can be done. A lot of those workers are of a certain persuasion and can and do considerable damage without little recourse.

Elections are only as good as they are fair. What troubles me is my lack of confidence that fair elections will take place. If I were confident in that then I would feel much better knowing the American people would right the ship.

Well written, Hayes. I agree 100%, and would only tweek a couple things (but NO fundamental difference!) if I was going to quote you…
I would love to see this show up in newspaper Op/Ed (opinion/editorial) pages all over the country.

Thank You for posting

Hayes, you are a wisdom warrior. I enjoy reading your posts. With recent events, I have reduced the amount of information that I consume online and via network TV news. The political rhetoric has become so toxic that one cannot discern the truth from all the noise.

I too feel this overall sense of unease. I to have developed a miss trust of all media. I to feel a pending pandemonium. I am at a loss of what to do, except to look out for those we love, keep them close and be ready to protect them if the need arises.
I fear for our country. I know that I am not the first, nor am I the last. I do have hope that people will see the error of their choices and change the trajectory that we are going down.
My Dad passed away last year at 74, he told me that he was ready to go, that he was tired from all the worry and he did hope and pray for all of us left behind.
I look around at those stepping up to run for office and cringe. Trump is not it. Don't get me wrong I liked him but he is a blow hard. No Dem is it, they just want power and money. I don't see any good candidates, but I hope a person will rise up and lead.
I remember when Ronald ran no one believed and actor would make a good president, boy were they wrong. This is what we need again. I pray they show soon.
God bless and be prepared.
