New Double Stack 1911 Offering From Kimber

Interesting for sure and it'll probably sell well, but sort of odd specs wise in my opinion.

It's like they made a hybrid between a carry pistol and a range plinker. Aluminum frame... but stainless steel slide, bull barrel but fluted and only 15rd mags that are proprietary. It's not exactly small either.

Very much dislike the mags being proprietary when there's already several different manufacturers that take the same mags or other manufacturers mags in the 2011 / 1911 DS market.

Really strange spec sheet honestly, but the price point is nice. I welcome more competition in the 1911 DS / 2011 Market.

I agree that it’s kind of a mash up and it does seem like 15 rds is light, but I’m hoping the grip is thinner than a 2011. I just spent that same money for a 229 Legion that will be a carry gun and it comes standard with 15 rd mags. I carry a second mag and honestly if I can’t get myself out of the fray with 15 rounds, let alone 30, then I’m doing it wrong.

Well no surprise here. I think the 2011 is going to just become more popular and for good reasons. Although I think Kimber made a mistake in going with a proprietary mag. Honestly should of ensured it’s comparability with a staccato mag, like I believe the prodigy did. Or even gone the route oracle did, which will take a 320 mag, and match it with a popular magazine.

If I am not mistaken the Bull
Armory SAS has a proprietary mag as well.

I was just checking this little Kimber out. Looks mighty impressive regardless which color you choose. I think the all aluminum frame (no polymer grip) with no grip safety and the G10 grips look classy and will open up new customization possibilities with different grips, although the ones Kimber is using look dynamite.

The 2011, or DS 1911, or whatever you want to call it world is going to get a lot bigger.

Since Kimber specifically lists this as the KDS9c, notice the "c" for compact in the name, I wouldn't be surprised if a full size version comes out shortly after this one hits the streets.

This is just a double stack 1911, the 2011‘s are modular with a chassis that the grip attaches to. The frame on this is one piece more like the Rock Island double stack or Para Ordnance.

I'm sorry but for $1500 Kimber is way too high.
There are a lot of people who would say that $1500 for a Springfield Armory product is way too high and yet there are a lot of people who paid $1500 for their new Prodigy.

When the KDS9c has been out for a while, it will be available for a lot less that the $1500 MSRP that it shares with the Prodigy. I've seen Prodigy's as low as $1230, so theoretically the Kimber could be had for about the same.

If the quality of the Kimber is up to par, then I think the Kimber offers a lot for the money. A lot of people consider a polymer grip a bit on the cheap side (similar to polymer pistols) while the all aluminum frame and G10 grip combination looks a lot more up scale than the three piece frame/slide/polymer grip features on most 2011 style pistols. It has a lot to offer with a fluted barrel, optic ready capability and fiber optic sights.

Maybe I'm just getting used to high prices on firearms today, but IMO $1500 for a Kimber seems like a good deal, especially when discount off of MSRP kicks in. I know that many years ago Kimber had some quality problems, but it seems that's all behind them and they are known today for producing quality firearms.

That’s the part that intrigues me. The 2011 grips are heavy handed and lack the elegance of the 1911. The 1911 looks like a scalpel while the 2011 looks like a sledge hammer. If we can get a reliable, true double stack 1911 then I think we have the best of both worlds.
