New gun, barrel uncleaned?

Is it common or reasonable that a new gun (NIB) in the price range of $1900, would arrive with the barrel filthy from test fire ?

Seen it in the past a number if times. Not sure exactly how common it is, but it's certainly not uncommon. It might be mire common that I know as I guess I generally tear down and clean right away and not sure I look real close before doing so.

I’ve had a few come dirty from firing.
Honestly, lets me know they test fired the weapon for function, accuracy and extractor issues 😏🤪😉😉🙃🙃🙃
I was thinking (trying to be positive, of course) that what u and the others above said might indeed be the case:). So I’ll go with that!
It’s the first time I’ve seen it, I believe….

Naturally i expected to do a basic clean before firing, as a routine matter.

Funny though. My first-ever RIA 1911 several years ago came clean-barreled, with the exception of packing grease (SOP for RIA, lol).
Also had a test fire casing.

My Wilson came pristine, ready to fire, including an almost immaculate barrel. No shell casing, but did have the target.

Now my Standard Mfg arrives with no casing, no test target….. but still pretty fair proof it got a thorough test.

Thank you all, gentlemen.

I've seen dirty barrels on enough of my new guns to almost expect it. What surprises me is when I see dirty barrels on used guns. I've seen more than a few dirty barrels when I have looked at guns from the consignment case at my range. It blows my mind that an owner wouldn't take the time to do a basic cleaning before putting a gun up for sale. It always makes me wonder how well a gun was maintained by the original owner.

yes, all guns i have bought were a "bit dirty" in the barrel.

also too i will add, is that many times, there is very little to NO lube in the gun when i field strip them.

this is my regular habit,

1) look at gun at dealer

2) buy gun

3) take gun home

4) field strip, clean, and lube

5) start a "log book" on the gun, as to date of purchase, price, serial number, build date, dealer where bought

6) take gun to range run the snot outta it (at least 100 - 200 rds) with a combo of reloaded and new ammo, and get it all dirty again.....:p:p

7) wash, rinse repeat of step # 4

All reputable gun manufacturers will test fire production made guns to ensure proper operation, Mossberg would test fire some barrels only with high pressure rounds to ensure safety in barrel manufacturing.
When I worked for Mossberg from 2010-2015 we made 500 thousand guns a year cleaning every one after firing them would be impossible, every bolt action rifle and shotgun would be shot 5 rounds before final inspection and packing.

In my view, cleaning a new, out of the box gun should be standard procedure. What better way to get intimately familiar with your new toy and to inspect every part to insure that no damage or pilfering occurred between the shipping dock and your hands. In addition, you get to lubricate it to your standards of care before the first round goes through.

The funny thing is that I bought a couple of new HKs and their barrels were clean as a whistle and I was like, Hey, why isn’t my barrel dirty? That’s what I like about Walther. You get a dirty barrel and a signed target that they test fired your gun with.
