New member, new rifle

Just bought my first Springfield rifle today, a Saint ( base model ST916556BM ).

It was a toss up between the Saint and a Ruger 556.

It’s been 20+ years since I used an AR platform rifle so I’m a bit rusty to say the least.

Any suggestions as far as set up, ammo to use/not use, etc I know when they first came out there were issues.

I'd grab the cheapest ammo you can find for range use. TulAmmo steel cased 5.56 is probably the cheapest reliable range ammo you'll find.

From my experience the AR platform isn't typically ammo sensitive to what shoots reliably. The major factor for accuracy is the bullet grain weight to barrel twist rate.

If I may offer my two cents. I have 3 Ar's. A Saint, a Colt and a Bushmaster. For red dots I use Aimpoint Pro's and for weapon mounted lights I use Inforce. Both scopes and lights have been put through the ringer on the range and in and out of patrol vehicles as well and all I can say is I love em and rely on them. I'm sure other forum members may offer their experiences as well just my two cents worth. Welcome to the forum from Pennsylvania and you'll find lots of great valuable information here

Depending on how you want to use your new Saint, I would recommend a Sig Romeo 5 red dot to get yourself started. It is very good quality and very reasonably priced and will cowitness with your BUIS. I’m sure many others will be along shortly to advise you on how to spend your money too!.

can't help you on the rifle ammo, i'm a handgun guy myself, but good luck with it, and welcome to the site, many good people here and advice.

you may even get a candy bar if you respond in the next .0000000001 nano second

It will be for plinking and HD. Our current HD setup without the Saint is adequate but a little more oomph never hurt. I also work at a jail( non correction capacity) and while problems with inmates are rare it does happen on occasion. So I’m not trying to be too paranoid 😁

My next purchase is more mags for it and then I’m not sure. Either red dot or vertical foregrip( to make it easier for my wife) although no clue how to install the foregrip on the base model.

Thanks everyone for the advice/thoughts so far.

If you decide to purchase and fire remanufactured 5.56/.223, please familiarize yourself with the process of "mortoring" your rifle. My recommendation is simply do NOT buy remanufactured ammo. Why? Split cases. Had 5 out of one batch of 500 I got from a reputable online wholesaler. My Magpul stock took a beating until that garbage was gone.

Never had a split case since buying only newly-manufactured ammo. Enjoy the new boomstick.

You made a great choice. Rugers are turds. I ought to know, had a Ruger MPR and it spent more time back at Ruger than my house. Finally sold it and got the edge- a great rifle. Also have a basic saint.

My 1st ar (15) purchase was a s&w back in '14 and it's been great ever since. 2nd was a rock river, but haven't shot it very much due to deciding on optics (mainly trying to get a bushnell yardage pro mount). After that I've built 50'ish ar's in all sorts of cartridges. I've moved on to bolt action building. Hope your Saint is a good 1 for you! If you get a tube, holographic or an enclosed red dot it will be an all-weather optic. Food for thought!

Actually sold my savage 110 precision elite to get the Saint. Won the savage in a raffle a year ago but no place within a reasonable distance to use it past 100 yards.

Hope to get out to the range in the next week or 2 to try out the Saint and get the wife some range time with her new gun as well.
