Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone! First of all, let me introduce myself. Correctional Lieutenant at a medium custody prison in NC. Been there 14 years. Firearms instructor for the state since 2014. US Navy veteran, USS Deyo DD-989, 92-94. Married, father of 4 sons. Now, onto guns. Our duty weapon at work (for transportation and towers) is the M&P 40, so I'm partial to S&W. I have the Shield 40 and my wife has the Shield 9. I just won a Canik TP9SF Elite in a raffle. Researching which ammo to buy, both for target and home defense.

Welcome to the forum!

And congratulations on winning the raffle, the Canik is a great pistol!

I personally don't shoot or own any .40cal firearms but for 9mm carry I primarily use Federal HST 124gr JHP and for 10mm I typically carry 155gr Hornady XTP.

I have carried a variety of different ammo over the years and the only one I will not buy again is Hornady American gunner because the bullets would not stay seated in the shell and they would push into the case with just daily carry.

I personally dont have the means for in depth testing of ammo types so like most people I research the internet and one of the best people in my opinion for testing ammo types is Paul Harrell.

Welcome to the forum and thank you for your service, past and present.
For defense it’s hard to beat 124 gr. Federal HST. Winchester white box 124 gr. Is solid, priced well in normal times and has no noticeable difference in POI from HST in my experience. You could step all that up to 147 gr. If you wanted. I would just use the same weight target ammo as you do defense ammo. Those Caniks look like nice handguns. I’ve always shot 124 gr. through my VP9 and my Q5 Match. It’s a good idea to run different stuff through your guns though and make sure your guns like a particular brand and weight before bulk buying. Not that bulk buying 9mm is really feasible currently.

Welcome aboard!

I picked up some Ammo Inc JHP and Winchester Active Duty FMJ from a local shop. Interesting thing was what the guy had to say. He has acquired a network of other shops who work together and swap for each other's ammo needs. In these days of scarcity, it's good to see competitors working together instead of against each other. A little positivity I thought I'd share.
