New shooter - 911 question

Relatively new shooter, just bought a Springfield 911 - 9mm. ZERO rounds through the gun so far.

A few questions:

• Every time I field strip the gun…every time…the slide stop spring pops out / gets moved out of position. I can always manage to re-seat it and get the slide working again, but it's a pain. I have no idea if I've bent / warped the spring, but I don't think so. It's a real pain to mess with that spring during every field strip. Should I order a new one? Can you "upgrade" to a better spring?

• When I fully load either mag, extended or flush fit, the FINAL round that I load always wants to tilt upward at a 45 degree angle. Is this normal? I can kinda flatten it out before I insert the mag, but that top round always wants to pop up at an angle. I'm loading JHP ammo for what it's worth.

• I can insert a full mag (either mag) and chamber a round with everything going smoothly. However, when I hit the mag release and the mag drops out, the TOP round in the mag does one of TWO things. It either gets stripped off completely and falls out the mag well, or it ALMOST gets stripped out of the mag (about halfway) and sits at a severe 45 degree angle.

• Failure to eject. Once I drop the mag and and deal with the stripped / nearly stripped round, I try to eject the chambered round to make the gun safe. Every time though…each and every time…I have a failure to eject. The round almost ejects but I always have to hold the slide and "shake it out".

Again, I have ZERO rounds through the gun. These don't seem like "break in" issues to me though. Thoughts?

Thanks!

I have the 911 in .380. Don’t really have the first 2 issues you brought up, but I have the same issue while trying to eject a live round. Seems to me like the ejection port isn’t cut large enough to eject the round with the bullet still in the casing. I’ve put the round up to the opening and the round is longer than the opening.

I’ve never had a problem with the gun not ejecting spent casings while firing, so I just kind of view this as a minor inconvenience.

Thanks for the reply. I'm baffled by all my questions, but especially why my top round gets stripped completely off (or almost completely stripped off) the mag when I eject the mag.

I used to have a Kimber Micro9 that did this. Never completely figured it out. For some reason, the next round in the magazine gets pulled forward when the round above it is chambered. I think it had something to do with the angle of the curve in the top of the magazine being too wide for some reason. I don’t remember exactly, but I believe I took some pliers and closed the gap a little and it seemed to help. That top round would still move forward some, but wouldn’t completely fall out anymore like yours is doing now.

You can do an internet search for “top round falling out when eject magazine” or something similar. Seems this can be a common problem, not just with the SA911. Here’s one such thread I came up with using the search phrase I used.

Just looking through the results, it is discussed with 1911’s, Kimber Micro9s and Sig P938s as well. I think it’s more of a magazine issue than a gun issue.

Thank you!

I have a Ruger LC9 that has the same issue when using certain hollow point ammo where the top round in the mag gets pushed forward a little too much, most likely caused by the slightly shorter bullet due to the hollow cavity that will occasionally strip the first round when pulling the mag from the pistol. It will cycle fine without any problems at the range so It doesn't bother me.

It's probably just an ammo issue.

BTW welcome to the forum!
