Something happened last week that flew under the radar for many. True Velocity announced it is purchasing LoneStar Future Weapons for $84 million. Remember that the US Army novated the General Dynamics OTA to LoneStar over the summer. Although GD is still involved on some level with team TV, two of the three participating weapons systems are built by vertically integrated offerers, SIG and True Velocity. Which brings me to the next point.
In their press release about the purchase of LoneStar, TV also spilled the beans about something else; they stated that they are one of two teams remaining in the US Army’s competition to replace the M4 and M240 with a 6.8mm weapon and ammunition for its close combat formations. That means, Textron, the long shot with its ambitious case telescoping ammo and unique operation system, is out. I have been trying to verify rumors of this for the last couple of months. Textron wouldn’t talk about NGSW at AUSA and their subcontractors’ lips are collectively sealed. I’ve even simply asked the Army but their answer was that they couldn’t comment because the program is in source selection. Lots of rumors, plenty of smoke, but so far, only TV has gone on record about the field curtailing to two candidates.
It's design has ergonomic familiarity with the existing service platform, and the ammo would be easier to manufacture with existing facilities.
To me a design (General Dynamics/LoneStar/True Velocity) that's switched ownership 3X within a year indicates a lack of confidence and maturity. And that True Velocity is a relatively new org to the industry.
