Non-traditional Right/Left article on U.S. Gun Violence

I think the title is misleading - this article is not a traditionally right/Left political take on gun violence.

Finally an analysis of the issue based on history, regional culture, and settlement patterns in the U.S.

I like this stuff anyway - really interesting when analyzing gun violence. No solutions - just thought provoking and "Arming with Knowledge."

There is no such thing as GUN VIOLENCE.

It's a made up term to demonize weapons and give them the illusion of control over thier use.

We do not say knife violence when someone is stabbed, or baseball bat violence, or any other implenent type violence.

I know how about we call rape penis violence, it's obviously got it own mind everyone says...

Oh I did read it. And it does do it. It just doesn’t want you to know it’s doing it.

It started off by spreading the misleading statistics about red states and blue states. The one where they tell you red states have higher gun crime rates without mentioning that in those states all the gun crime happens in heavily blue cities. In fact if you discount blue cities gun crime rates in the US are statistically insignificant.

Then it blathers on about cultures and puritans and crap that has zero bearing on reality today.

Then it cites statistics on gun crime from the CDC as a source.

I could make the opposite argument - by attaching "violence" after gun - it makes all the things I do with my gun not a part of the discussion. It seperates suicide, murder, assault and iillegal activities from all the reacreational and "all lawful purposes I use my guns for.

"Gun violence" is not a trigger for me, nor does it take away anything from the crux, or point of this article.

It's a trigger for me simply because IT'S NOT YOU ITS AIMED AT. It is aimed at the uneducated non gun owners out there to demonize weapons and if they happen to be on the fence try to push them towards gun control.

And us accepting and helping normalize the incorrect label helps thier agenda.

I would argue that history has 100% bearing on exactly where we are in reality today. Not sure how one seperates that.
You would argue that things that happened 200 years ago have bearing on whether or not you have guns or agree with the 2A ? Other than the obvious, revolution, which involved ALL of us, I don’t see how your great great grandpa being a Quaker or an Irishman frames that opinion.

I found it interesting, reading about the author’s breakdown of the U.S. into regions. And, it could be that when those regions were first settled, where the folks were coming from had a big influence on the culture. Bob has it right about the big cities, though. That is where the crime is now. Plus, there has been a huge amount of intermixing and migration of people over the last few hundred years. I think read it with maybe a little skepticism.

Every single city that has a high rate of crime, violence and shootings, with few exceptions, are BLUE cities within those Red States. Period. Every single one of those BLUE cities are run by the progressive leftists with their progressive policies in place. Every single one of these cities have tough gun laws that penalize the regular citizen while dropping the gun charges on the criminals that commit the crimes, and turn them loose on the street. Take every one of these cities out of the equation, and you have one of the safest countries in the world. This IS a political piece. Hint: "Gun violence is actually worse in Red States". That is the same diatribe every single marxist/leftist spouts on every single forum.

Twisted statistics to fit the same ad nauseum narrative under the guise of "colonial culture and history" as the driver of the article. No thanks.

Thanks for the links to the articles, Cliff. It is pretty easy to see why gun sales are staying high. I knew homicides in my area were high, but didn’t realize we (Memphis) were number one! Memphis elected a Soros-backed District Attorney General in August of 2022. Sigh…

Yes.
Maybe less so from a micro/individual perspective......
But overall, on a macro level, yes -
I grew up in southern IL - below I-70. That area was settled from Tennessee and Kentucky. Chicago and norther IL were settled from the north. Those patterns are EXACTLY why to this day southern IL is waaay different that Chicago and Northern IL. - beyond firearms. Anything in IL today - below I-70 is still essentially the South.

You play bass - doesn't the history and evolution of style, technique in bass history directly impact modern players?

Again, i would make the point - history is a direct cause of all aspects of our lives. (But my undergrad was in History)

Hi,

More on the subject.

Thank you for your indulgence,
