According to some data the 45-70 with the same barrel length and bullet weight will have more muzzle energy. Barnes states in their load data with new Marlin 1895 tested up to 42k. 500mag max psi over 60k. Seems like the 500mag would give more velocity? The extra 18k of pressure really adds up.

If my reload data is correct for my 45-70, with 300 grain Nosler Partitions traveling around 2,300-2,400 fps, you're looking North of 3800 ft lbs of energy, if I'm not mistaken. I'll take what I've got.
