The venerable .30-30 Winchester, affectionately dubbed “30-30” by generations of bread-and-butter deer hunters, has been around for more than a century. Yet, how much do we really know about the roots, ballistics, firearms, and uses for this darling round that continues to hang around in the era of cartridges that shoot faster and flatter?

My first deer rifles were lever action 30-30s. Great for Missouri. When the old man started going to Colorado and Wyoming every year he got into 30-06s. Particularly 700s and BARs. As a result I have a surplus of both 30-30s and 30-06s. I no longer hunt however so they are relegated to the safes mostly.

The ol' thurty-thurty lever gun is a common deer rifle here in West Tennessee. I'm a Winchester guy myself, but plenty of Marlins abound as well. My first center fire rifle was a Winchester 94. I still have one.
Gotta be careful when reloading the .30-30. Its a very old case design and a bit thin walled. A little too much lube will cause dents in the case and a little too much crimp will bulge the shoulder.
Still, its a great cartridge. (y)

I've taken whitetail deer with a variety of calibers and types of firearms, but my go to rifle for the big woods in Arkansas is my Marlin 336Y takedown carbine in .30-30. It's short 16 1/4 inch barrel is plenty accurate and I've never had to shoot one twice with it. I've taken a few coyotes and several feral hogs with it as well.
