On this day, October 21st, in 1797, the U.S.S. Constitution is launched.

On March 27, 1794, the United States Congress authorizes the construction of six frigates with The Naval Armament Act. That same year construction begins at Edmund Hartt's Shipyard, Boston. Work continues until 1797.

On July 22, 1798, she sails from Boston to duty in the Caribbean.
From 1798 through 1801 she serves in the Quasi-War with France.

From 1803 through 1805 she served in the Barbary Wars off the coast of Africa as a flagship. She remained in the Mediterranean until 1807 when she returned for more maintenance and repairs, this time in New York.

During the War of 1812 the U.S.S. Constitution fought against and defeated the HMS Guerriere on August 19, 1812, the HMS Java on December 29, 1812, and the HMS Cyane and HMS Levant on February 20, 1815. It was during the battle with the Guirriere that the Constitution earned her nickname of Old Ironsides.

The USS Constitution has its own 50,000-acre grove of Oak trees being grown in Indiana.
