In 1988 someone in my unit lost an M16A1 in the field at Graff.

They kept the entire Battery in the field for 30+ days looking for that weapon. It was never found and the person who it was issued to lost a stripe which ended his career.

In the Early 2000s someone from the 2nd Brigade Combat Team lost an M9 pistol. The entire Battalion that the weapon was confined to quarters on Fort Carson until the weapon was found.

3 days later it was found in a dumpster.

Now they lost 31 pistols at Fort Benning and no one even noticed for a couple of weeks?

From what I can tell the consolidated equipment pool at Benning/Moore is a type of installation level warehouse facility. It likely receives, stores and issues all sorts of equipment and weaponry. Unless both the uniformed and civilian personnel are really on the ball the lack of transparency in these warehouses can be a problem. I've known of instances of corruption and theft at a couple of installations, one even concerning government quarters appliances. One day at a subpost of a large installation, a civilian semi-driver wandered into our building looking for directions to the warehouse and come to find out he had a semi full of M60 MGs! Incidents like this made the leadership rush to incorporate the RF tag system to track all shipments of military gear. That and the swift punishment of those who stole and sold gov't property.
