Operation Sea Orbit (Nuclear Task Force One) Map of Globe Circumnavigation. Nuclear Task Force One consisted of: USS Enterprise (CVAN 65); USS Long Beach (CLGN 9), and USS Bainbridge (DLGN 25), which traveled 34,732 statute miles without refueling or taking on supplies for the more than 6,000 men aboard. The trip commenced on July 31, 1964 when the ships completed operations in the Mediterranean and sailed past Gibraltar. Task Force One, Commanded by Rear Admiral Bernard M. Strean, was visited by officials of 12 countries. Majority of the visits were underway calls in which planes from the Enterprise flew inland to pick up officials for an inspection of Task Force One and an air power demonstration.
On its cruise, Task Force ONE steamed 31,000 miles in sixty-five days, conducting underway air shows around Africa, through Southern Asian and Pacific waters and up the east coast of South America.
The cruise, named Operation Sea Orbit, was a conclusive demonstration of the special global mobility and self-sufficiency of nuclear-powered surface ships... a display of the advanced design of contemporary American sea power around the world serving as striking evidence of the enormous power for peace possessed by the United States.
