What a controversial SOB (as was his favorite saying though not in an acronym..). He is great in a lot of ways. Admirable in quite a few and condemnable in others. Gonna find another book on him and listen to that.
i liked the guy. i even liked that he could not stand cowards, up to the point where he (in the movie) slapped that soldier across the face, as being too scared to go into battle. What a controversial SOB (as was his favorite saying though not in an acronym..). I want tact and political correctness in my Politicians.Regardless of our preference for a person with "tact", Patton was perfect for his job at the time. Our military would be far more effective with guys like him today, rather than those concerned with being woke over military might. I do admit, I am not a fan of him bring a pet dog to a theater of war, however...other than that, he's ok IMO.
I haven't heard anything about Patton dropping bomb(s) on Russia, but MacArthur wanted too keep going after the Philippines into Russia. When my oldest was in 2nd grade the 2nd grade class did a living museum where each kid had to pick someone from the past. The requirements were dressing the part, memorizing their bio and saying the catch phrase/notable sayings. He did Douglass MacArthur right down to his pipe. What would've it been like if he would've been elected instead of Truman?I want tact and political correctness in my Politicians.
I want an undeniable winning spirit of the damned in my Generals.
There is no place for tact on a battlefield.
Patton was fit for the Job.
Eisenhower fit for his
Like sports. Let the athlete play and leave the press conference to the back of house.
Edit: i would have fought the Ruskies back to Moscow, and Prob dropped a bomb on them too… like Patton wanted.
Good thing Im not a politician.
I’d **** off half the world .. then Nuke em

Read his in depth bio info decades ago in some books. He did slap a soldier.yes, but Ike wanted Patton out.
he made Patton apologize (at least according to the movie) to the soldier he slapped for being a coward.
i imagine the movie was very close to what happened.
i too believe in "nuking" some countries when it is needed. not this "let's sit down and talk BS"....
you simply cannot "talk" to war criminals or evil dictators.
AgreeI and about 200 fellow servicemen awaiting our flight to Vietnam watched the movie Patton in 1971 in the departure lounge at Travis AFB, CA. Lots of cheers for Patton in that lounge that night, from young men bound for war. I have read several books on the man since then and he had a true genius for war and leadership. Patton is an integral part of American culture like so many of our great generals throughout history. I have come to the conclusion that America needs leaders like Patton and MacArthur during war, but does not tolerate great leaders in peacetime.
i know, too bad we really don't seem to have any more like him. maybe the mold was broken?Read his in depth bio info decades ago in some books. He did slap a soldier.
Yes, Ike wanted him out as well.
Patton among other Generals was a hot head.
He didnt want his temper to shine thru with the press corp to the public, but Patton was a great General and Tactician. Not very good at public speaking, public relations and “political correctness” with Allies
