While explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are credited with the opening of the American West, one piece of equipment that kept them alive is often overlooked. No, it’s not a knife or a musket; it’s the Girandoni air rifle—the granddaddy of all precharged pneumatic arms.

Enter the Umarex Origin .22.

I remember an article, oh God must be 50 plus years ago, in Guns and Ammo, I believe, by Peter Hathaway Capstick. He was a proponent of using air guns for long range shooting practice.

The gist was that a green plastic army man figure, almost every boy had, at y number of feet was the same size as a man at x number of feet. Yeah today the idea of head shooting little men tends to make one feel different than it did 50 years ago as a kid lol.

I did this a ton in the backyard with an old crossman pump up air rifle. I got a pretty good eye from it too. I really think it worked.

Cool., but I’m not sold. I’ve got an older RWS model 36 break action that was rated for I believe 1150 fps in 177 and 875 in .22, and it does it with a single break action, cocking the piece for loading. Accuracy? Aspirins at 20 yards make easy pickings off a rest. A lot easier to fire range sessions with than messing with precharged rifles.
