Personal Defense with Classic Firearms

I suspect too many people think guns are like cars; that is, a 100 year old gun is nothing more than an antique, not worthy for consideration, definitely shouldn’t be shot.

Well.

I've got a few Smiths and Colts that have seen their centennial and are still going just as strong as the day they left the factory.

In fact, one of my favorite revolvers is a S&W .38 Hand Ejector, Military & Police (M&P—sound familiar?), 4th Change, 1921 vintage.

I’d sooner trust my life to it, loaded with modern 158gr+P SWCHP, than many new production revolvers.

And my 1918 Colt M1911? Runs HydraShok 100% reliably. Not quite as accurate as my Baer at 25 yards...but it'll make do.

And, if I gotta, I’ll drag out my 1896 vintage 1st Gen SAA in .45C; it'll still work just fine.

Rifles? Got a Swede M96, Oberndorff production, 1900...dropped a coyote with it at a quarter mile.

So, yeah. Old guns still work great.

The continued functionality of firearms is one of the primary reasons that I have invested in them. Almost everything else I own is designed to wear-out and be replaced. My guns are one of the few things that can be passed down to future generations, that will continue to run with minimal maintenance. I have nice computers and appliances, but I don't expect them to still be in common use 50 years from now. I would not be surprised to learn that my guns were still useful for home defense and recreational shooting 100 years in the future.

True...so true.
