Whether for home defense or hunting, a 12-gauge shotgun is most effective when paired with the right load of 12-gauge ammo.

I'll use (according to the box) what is being shot (quail, turkey). That's aball I have to contribute. Other than that I just have 00 and slugs. I only use slugs in the 20" or less barrel length. While I do on very short occasions use those long barreled sg's (not sure on the Winchester or Remington models) 760, 2400 or whatever?

BB will contribute to this discussion with his sage advice since he's a subject-matter expert.
I am only an expert at what works for me, with the guns I have and the situation I have.

I load #9 ( Unique) for quail.
For HD I like Federal Flite Control 00B. I am getting to like the Force X2 as well.
For SD I like Federal Flite Control 00B or Truball ( 1600FPS) slugs.
For training I like whatever field load I can get cheap. Cheap, crappy slugs ( Sterling or something) and #1 and #4 buckshot.

These work for me because I have patterned them in the shotguns I use and I know what they can and can't do. YMMV.

For the record all kinds of loads will work for HD. 20 gauge, 4.10, #1 and #4 buck. Even birdshot ( though I would strongly suggest at least #6). It's all about patterning your shotgun at the expected distances of engagement. And training.

I've been happy with the Fiocchi Defense Dynamics 00B patterns out of my 590 Retrograde with 18" barrel. Better than a number of other more well-known loads.

In my own testing it came in 3rd or 4th I think. That was with smoothbore 18.5" barrels. I don't recall exactly, but I have it written down. Federal FC, Force X 2, the old military green 00B all patterned tighter for me.
