Maintaining any proficiency with the little pocket blaster is a real chore.

Pocket Pistol Practice (Doesn't Have To Be Punishment)

Depends on what you’re running, I guess.

I don’t find a session with my P238 punishing; nor do I find my J-frames punishing, either.

But I could see a long session with a LCP, G42, etc, as not much fun.

Agreed on the LCP. When I first got my LCP 10 years ago, I ran 200-300 rounds through in each of the first couple of sessions, breaking the gun in and getting used to it. It was not fun AT ALL! ;) The trigger starts wearing on my finger after that many rounds. My Springfields XDM's are so much more comfortable to shoot.

My primary pocket gun is an LCP II. I practice with it every other trip to the range, but I've dropped my round count to about 25 shots due to ammo scarcity. I still manage to put a couple hundred rounds a year through it, and don't find it punishing to shoot.

I can fire a lot of rounds through my S&W 351C and 351PD, but any of the J-frames in traditional defensive calibers start to wear on my wrist after a few cylinders. I can put tons of 357 Magnum through any revolver with a full grip, regardless of barrel length, but the two-finger grip on the J-frames just kills me.

Something that article drove home to me is that while I practice with my carry (both the LCP and the XDM Compact) using a two handed stance and strong hand, I very rarely have ever practice with my weak (non-dominant) hand. That is something to correct when I go to the range. It may be hard, due to nerve damage causing numbness (but no loss of strength) in my left thumb and first 2 fingers.

Sadly due to the ammo situation, I am limiting my practice with either .380 or 9mm to a single box of ammo, and doing most shooting with my trusty old Ruger Mark II. Being the target model with the bull barrel, it can shoot pretty much non stop and never get tired of eating ammo. Just wish I had more than 5 magazines to preload for the Ruger, and that it held more than 10 rounds. Anyway, I will probably start practicing off-hand with the Ruger to work on off hand skills.

I've thought of buying the LCP II in .22LR, just for kicks, but even if I could find it, I doubt I would want to pay the high price right now.
