Having been to China, I can tell you from first hand experience that you can smell the methane from quite a distance. It was easy to find a toilet when you needed one. I also discovered how long I could hold my breath!
I've seen about a dozen videos of this type from china. It's almost like the people are doing this on purpose for effect. I'm thinking they more often then not just get some methane burn off not the explosion. The sewer system there must be a total disaster to even let that much methane build up.

I remember about 25 years ago one of those burning bags almost burned down a house near where I lived, nobody was home at the time so no one was hurt but two boys were arrested and spent time in prison for arson.

No, not really surprised, but pleasantly informed. I guess the old saying "old habits never die", or something similar would be appropriate !!!! Fact is I hadn't thought of that old trick in probably 60 years.
