Python swallows full size deer whole

So it isn't just wolves, bears, cougars etc that can prey on deer (or on you!) as some snakes not even that big can do so without problems.

From the article - "Scientists from the Conservancy of Southwest Florida came upon a python that was eating a full-size white-tailed deer. The scientists shared pictures and videos of the 15-foot-long python that weighed 115 pounds, while the deer weighed about 77 pounds. The massive encounter was documented for a study that was just released.

The study found that Burmese pythons can consume prey even larger than scientists realized. The snakes can swallow deer, alligators and other prey whole."

"Scientists" no such animal anymore they went the way of the Ivory billed woodpecker although there are a lot of

that pretend to be. JMHO. I'm with wolfpack076. Dead snake deer or no deer.

Florida has a python elimination program.

Python removal agents will be paid:

  • An hourly rate ($13.00 per hour or $18.00 per hour depending on the area) for up to ten (10) hours each day while actively searching for pythons on designated lands.
  • An additional incentive payment of $50.00 for each python measuring up to four (4) feet plus an extra $25.00 for each foot measured above four (4) feet. See example below:
  • An additional $200.00 for each verified active nest.
Due to the high volume of applications we receive, we are unable to respond to every applicant. We will contact you if you are selected.

That seems overly complicated and bureaucratic to me. Just put a bounty on the things and make it worthwhile. It sure worked (or not depending on your point of view) on Wolves, Mt. Lions, and Bison.

I raced against a guy that had one about 10 to 12 feet long. i went to his house to buy some parts and he showed met the snake. he converted a whole bedroom just for that danged snake. ask me if i wanted to watch it eat a rabbit. i said hell no. i didn't tell him if he was in my neighborhood and that damned thing got out it would eat some buckshot.

Nasty snake stunk all to be damned. no way i'f have one of them things as a pet. i did tell him one day somebody gonna come over here and fine the remains of you that snake crapped out.

I need more information on how the deer died before thinking the snake actually caught and killed a deer. Does swallowing a found carcass constitute danger?
Not that I claim to be an expert on this particular topic, but I am pretty well versed on both the white tailed deer and the snakes, and I'd say without question it's possible, even probable the deer was caught live and swallowed. I've seen an alligator cut out of the stomach of a snake that even though not weighed at the time was big enough to weigh 70lbs easily. And was certainly a more even match for the snake than a white tailed deer.

I wouldn't advise any hunter or trapper to lay down after lunch and take a nap down there. Are there snakes big enough down there to swallow a grown man? You bet-cha!

I'll argue with anybody there's no such thing as a pet snake ... a snake is fairly sedate as long as it's belly is full, so if you feed it enough, and often enough it will allow you to handle it, etc. But it will never be your pet.

But why would you WANT to handle it😳. The only thing I’d want to feed a snake (ANY snake) is a load of shoy. For these guys I’m thinking #4 buck

This is such a old and tired assertion ... the large mouth bass and even the alligators are far bigger than anything further north, now ain't that right? LOL!

Not quite & incorrect.

Bergmann's Rule - Animals tend to be larger as you travel further away from the equator. As the animal becomes larger or when body mass increases, proportionally the surface area of the animal decreases which results in less loss of body heat.

Fish species are a bit different, but how many 75 lb. large-mouth bass exist vs. a 75 lb. King Salmon?

Alligators die off not much further north than the SE corner of Arkansas because they're reptiles and are cold-blooded.

The only alligators in my state are in cowboy boots.

Tend to agree with Talyn on this with the notable exception of cold blooded creatures. Also some like crocs etc don't really live up north or far south and some smaller relatives of theirs like the cayman, are small and live around the equator. Now there is the question of penguins - haha these only live in antarctica so we can't guess at would be relative in the amazon jungles. ;)
