I like radial on a pcc and pistol caliber lever guns when threaded. Large bore of 45cal-ish in straight wall cartridges. Most bottleneck style depending on use/cartridge I use more of the directional. These are just what works best for me.

My .450 Bushmaster has an 18" heavy barrel and a brake with 3 oblong holes at 3 and 9 oclock. Very much like would be seen on a Howitizer. I've spent a couple years putting it together piece by piece but an injury has prevented me from putting 1 round through it yet. I'm pretty sure my range neigbors will not be happy when that day comes.

The SA brakes on the Victor 5.56/.308 work great.
LOUD as heck, not friendly to fellow shooters, but work excellent on climb for follow on shots
