Ragged Ole Flag

Not looking for advice or anything just sharing.

My boss comes up to me today and asks if I'd seen an American flag in the dumpster after changing light bulbs this morning and I told him no. He says okay, goes to my buddy who's a lot taller and says "You mind getting the flag of of the dumpster today after work? " My buddy says no and as soon as we clock out we go straight to the dumpster. We take her out and she's pretty rough but she'll be flying outside my home soon enough.

For those wondering why I'm gonna fly a ragged flag, listen to the song "Ragged old Flag" by Johnny Cash. (Also where I got the title for the post).

I'll post pictures when she's flying.

I mean this with all due respect because I know you have good intentions and this isn't meant as an insult.

I just wanted to make you aware that hoisting a tattered American flag can be seen as a sign of disrespect when it comes to American flag etiquette.

can a person take such a flag to say an American Legion Post, and have it exchanged for a newer or better conditioned one.???

or is there some sort of other place to exchange that flag?

maybe your congressman or senators office..???

i really don't know, i never ran into this myself.

Usually, you can bring it to a VFW/Legion and they will dispose of it properly.

Shouldn’t be that hard to buy a new one.

Years ago in my state Pennsylvania a lot of our local law makers had them at their offices and they'd give them out. I checked a few months ago they now only give them out to civic organizations and Veterans organizations. As far as disposal a few towns around me have old US mailboxes painted olive drab and they're marked for disposal of old tattered unusable Flags. Just what we have available in my area of Pennsylvania.

Here is flag disposal info from the Department of Defense

How to Properly Dispose of Worn-Out U.S. Flags
Many state and county government offices and Veterans of Foreign Wars posts have flag disposal boxes outside of their buildings.
Flag disposal locations such as your local Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) posts, American Legion, and Boy and Girl Scout organizations, even some Walmart and Home Depot locations will gladly take them to recycle or burn.

It is good to see I am in the presents of patriots. I am proud of my country and grateful to the men and women who defend it. Respecting the flag shows respect to those who served and died for it.

Here is my contribution in honor of my dad who came in at Normandy:
