Range Report: 10 Yard Practice, 3/29/24

BassCliff

Professional
Greetings brothers and sisters,

Well, Mrs. BassCliff is out of town and after contemplating Good Friday (He is risen!) I decided to go to the range for the second time this week. I went to the newer facility of which I'm a member, brought the XD45 Mod.2 Tactical and the XD9 Service for some plain old accuracy fundamentals. I'm hoping to build on the infinitesimal progress I've been making lately. Two steps forward and one step back is still progress, right?

It was pretty busy at the range today but I managed to secure Lane #2, my favorite!

I was going to keep it simple today, shooting mostly B-8 targets at ten yards. I brought 50 rounds of LAX Ammo .45ACP 230 grain and 100 rounds of Blazer 9mm 124 grain. I practiced with 10-shot strings on every target.

I think I'm getting the hang of this XD45. This is the very first target, only 2 hits out of the black.

AP1GczMrVzTbDERomweVjqYRVk1JN9GN6xFoXmDbnfBbqpwaiE8WjMWefWJJa5NMI8oYcvNKQR5LKJVFd-DBXlQ-gOJxFD1piwjXZOVBUuSTfi16ar7bHTSy4ArEjYKWLWl0zGRtv9O4aGXB44M7BSs6NIyhPQ=w1236-h927-s-no

I had printed up a bunch of repair centers. Here's target #2. Gimme the line breaks and they're ALL in the black.

Target #3 is looking pretty not too bad as well.

AP1GczP_cwn438UNOo5l2M_4K0UuroN0dwH3og_36HmBa43UQ3C86bL9kJudZlJzSLA2tWGUZRM_ed4ASeShFi1bT3bda4ZjRskTT3G14e5WNGozB64JJz1JArM-GPcRjzsYOKo8bcR2oUCCvt7xSo8Do-T6gg=w1236-h927-s-no

Target #4 also has only three hits outside the 10 ring, but none in the X ring.

AP1GczOHvujaNYsNarUstsNYq3-K-4AGClxBDSosFSv9Sowhq8B_KnTxzzmLEKStmHKigCWM1Z7DFT0tNfsXUWWS1am72DuUQFQYxwqZCEdSTR82dZp1qqwduyNEvorcbARjwfD5E_MJbRMffc_k6rG2WPrn6Q=w1236-h927-s-no

For my last target using the XD45 I thought I'd try a B-8 with a contrasting yellow dot in the X ring. I guess it helped these old eyes, only one hit outside the 10 ring.

I'm really getting to like this XD45 Mod.2 Tactical. I might even want to carry it if I can find a holster. They can make a holster at the range. Both ranges have a press and blanks to mold to just about any gun, IWB and OWB. Since this pistol is no longer being sold it's been hard to find a holster for it. But I'm still undecided on the TLR-6. I suppose if I had a holster made to accommodate the light the gun would still fit without it. I need to zero the laser anyway. So I put off the decision to make a holster until next time I visit the range.

Oh, sure. Let's have a glam shot with my XD45 Mod.2 Tactical next to a pretty good target.

AP1GczObg7BlxtV18f195wW2wUmSyW1Z-7KdAfiAiuRez-R9iFodqpwYT_OysjCCEw4NjLZakdoXR2TrFZ0U1JeiCXk6JAEp_mECRHL7_LEnasYcXicxrm_UitcZMw-zQ4T0SOrmwd0oDRlMmRKcAkUazGnh_Q=w1236-h927-s-no

For grins and giggles, this is what the first B-8 looked like under the other centers, after 50 rounds. I got me a pretty good ragged hole going.

AP1GczOPzLlZdZ5axYt9QfSi_crc_B7EXyx6vo37DfgcYxWcvY_3lXr-WvLQDuWCCEJ2G0oC18BR61LDLd-kynsZzgU9LQ7Ebgpspv4M0x82Cx_W4xefljKU3f6z-ANZOjI3h1uc5X94zHzWxvhbUgvzjEdqbA=w1236-h927-s-no

Now lets move on to the XD9. I'm embarrassed to show you this first target. Go ahead, let me have it. As usual, I just let my guard down after having a couple of pretty good targets. Oops.

AP1GczNpZArQEPdC93thKW81byJ2tXNC9bVghjDrso6ml52ax2HfKjfQ31IxdKBnEgpHEPE0LFBqUbamUnLpb_ndYYhWmdILJtfQpxUG3qBRNuWneULIGowEBI4uZqgNAey2rXvLosgYnsfiDi2qJSQXTmyIkw=w1236-h927-s-no

Now, let's get with the program and shoot like I want to defend myself. Here's XD9 target #2.

AP1GczNdFHPE0MVWfrkSpVjt4qTiP7I_0DgWfNiwiKvApjfKOsGue09bticSnCyV3_KpU0ibCTchf49hDu4jdy7mtHnoCG5CZ7-0m762pd_WILCK6YdgXDLvo_J5Fh6-bXZ4htho0sTMZkZBxJ9K-7xDyHbiiw=w1236-h927-s-no

There ya go. Once I can do this more consistently I can move out to 12-15 yards and dial it in again. How about a glam shot?

AP1GczOBCeiR7IgkCj6Gjd37rfSd0fxo65ZLsSv6zpgoRjwTFz4fCV_wvqDvoTd0YUzA2AxHAx2jh8EvsGjgPR9422apksO2xBhtHZUbb5rjv80JlHLK6xfOwj7f1lEADZo8kfdWGGqPPbC38xUkg3veBj1V9g=w1236-h927-s-no

I let my concentration slip during target #3.

AP1GczPpjdGseKuiW-I9GxADKgOGJISNQjtR_aXOWEO5AHlS2aLv_Ezqx2kPqIqhcR4F8xKz70THB55U_F-1zk1bbSgOg5VbMJC8BfTM0ZjJY-KpctEvgkrrmZ0XyfOMG4TbtKkzymUNDP_hqO0-aRh_Xqxfgg=w1236-h927-s-no

For targets #4 and #5 I used the yellow dot center. the contrast seems to help, a little, maybe.

The A box on these silhouettes is 2"x3.75". Drat, I missed one hit.

Then I shot a couple of 8" reactive circles. I'm starting to fall apart.

OK, one last regular B-8. Let's try really hard.

AP1GczOlwnubxKJoZtZxnWBv4GwLzLJArSft9ZicS10Pw5niFbUn-fwFrh6QYl-90C4HY3DfW0FP7wF4tMCl1cFdO_yXLw6-9ylqrQK--3dYjbs8dit3-1Rp-Ax9BHC4k2bZRKhM03-RMZaNSozQO66FHbpXKA=w1236-h927-s-no

For my last string of 10 I'm going to alternate center and head shots, trying to move at a good clip, acquiring the target before moving the pistol, etc.

I guess except for that shot in the ear those hits would've done some damage. Now I'm out of ammo so it's time to get home and feed the dog. Since Mrs. BassCliff is going to be out of town I'll try to get two days at the range again next week. I feel like I'm just about to turn a corner. Thanks for putting up with me. All the best to you and yours.

I still feel you’re lots better than I am. But practice makes perfect right? I personally don’t believe in “perfect”. It’s all relative, you know what I mean? Anyway, I need to push life out of the way for at least once a week and get my skills up. You, on the other hand, seem to be doing just fine. I just wish we had the courses offered at our range that you do. We aren’t even allowed to practice drawing from holsters.

Good shooting, my friend!

Very nice shooting’ Cliff.

Try Muddy River Tacticsl for a very comfortable, tight riding OWN holster.
Clinger makes a nice OWB holster for this gun that is comfortable and conceals very well. It used to be called No Print Wonder. I carry my XD Mod 2 4” service model .45 in one.

Thanks, brother! Those are two holster companies I have not shopped. I'll have a look.

You are too kind. It's not a contest. We're just sharing our fun. I've been trying to keep them Texas boys off my case. It's taken me quite a while to practice my way up to mediocre. I'm finally beginning to keep my focus on the front sight all the way through the trigger press, so the sight picture doesn't move. You can tell when I lose it. Consistent practice helps. "Perfect practice" helps you improve. But if we all were perfect then there would be only one hole in the target at the end of the day. That's not very much damage. ;) Keep up the good work.

Hi,

Hey, you done good. It's always a bit of a throw off when you go from .45 down to 9mm. Especially when you are anticipating that kick.

Yeah, OK, let's blame that and not my lousy platform manipulation.
I don't know, I think I should be able to make that transition a little smoother. That skill could come in handy if my EDC and backup are two different calibers. I guess that's something else I can add to my training. Thanks for stopping by, 'preciate the kind words.

Thank you for your indulgence,

BassCliff
